Approve the purchase of compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel for fleet vehicles from
SunLine Services Group as an alternative source.
Recommendation:
Discussion:
Thirty-two City fleet vehicles operate on compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel. For a period of time,
Clean Energy was the only vendor in our area for this alternative energy fuel and on May 11, 2006
City Council authorized staff to purchase CNG fuel from Clean Energy for fiscal year 2006-07.
Within the Coachella Valley there are four CNG fueling stations operated by Clean Energy; the City
obtains the majority of its CNG fuel at the Clean Energy station located at the Burrtec Waste
Management facility in Palm Desert.
Until recently, Clean Energy also operated the CNG fueling station at the SunLine facility in Thousand
Palms; City staff used the SunLine facility whenever the Burrtec facility was out of service. However,
SunLine is no longer affiliated with Clean Energy. SunLine now controls its own CNG fuel at its
facility, and they have made the fuel available to the other agencies in the valley.
Since Clean Energy is no longer affiliated with SunLine, our fuel purchasing cards are no longer valid
at the SunLine facility. Public Works staff has acquired new fuel cards from SunLine for use at their
facility, and hereby requests Council's approval to purchase CNG fuel from SunLine Group services
as an alternative location. Funds are budgeted annually in account 110-4331-413-2170 for the
purchase of CNG fuel and other automotive fuels.
