CA 7007 APR 16 AM 10: 0 I April 10, 2007 Sheila Gilligan Assistant City Manager City of Palm Desert 73510 Fred Waring Drive Palm Desert, CA 92260 Dear Sheila, It is with deep regret that I find it necessary to resign from the Palm Desert Marketing Committee. In doing so, I want to express to you, the City Council and the entire committee my sincere gratitude for allowing me to serve the city I love so much for so many years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my years of involvement and service to our committees; I have enjoyed having the opportunity to work to help provide Palm Desert with a high level of promotional and marketing expertise. I am proud of the many achievements our committee has made. In leaving, I would like to share some thoughts and suggestions that I hope will be my way of saying thank you for an experience that has meant so much to me. Please look at what follows similarly to dining at a buffet restaurant. Take some, leave some and always feel free to contact me with any thoughts or questions. I love to brainstorm and this is something I can certainly continue to do. Here are a few ideas to consider: 1. Utilize more completely the many wonderful talents of the Marketing Committee members. Offer each member the chance to sit on subcommittees designed to provide the group as a whole with more in-depth ways to serve the marketing needs of Palm Desert. 2. Serve the small as well as the big businesses. I believe there should be quarterly marketing promotions whereby every business that chooses can get involved with Palm Desert to help sell what they have to offer and provide local residents with special opportunities to shop Palm Desert. Utilize Ruth Ann and Marketing Committee members to reach out and help local businesses. Plan an annual Marketing Committee retreat to plan what the committee can do for the next year. Set goals. Before the retreat, send committee members out to talk with Palm Desert merchants and residents. Find out how we can better serve the community. 4. When we sponsor some of the larger events, such as golf tournaments, create ways where Palm Desert can gain more exposure. 1 believe that all the events we sponsor are quite worthwhile; I feel, however, that we can maximize our benefits by placing a Marketing Committee member on the planning committee for each event. Candidly, the MC member should enjoy the involvement for this committee. I am sure that other thoughts will come to me, as I will always be thinking about Palm Desert and the wonderful relationships and experiences I've had these past several years. One last thought, should you continue to want a member at large, why not select a retired media or marketing person? Such a person could bring vast knowledge to the committee and not endanger a conflict of interest. Again, thank you for allowing me to serve Palm Desert. I wish you, the Council, the committee members and the city the best. I feel greatly privileged to have been a part of this group.
