STANLEY PROCTOR, DEE CLEMENTS, AND CLAY DAHLBERG TO CREATE MODELS/PRESENTATION RENDERINGS FOR AN "ANDY THE DONKEY MAN" SCULPTURE SUBMITTED BY: RICHARD L. TWEDT DATE: AUGUST 9, 2007 CONTENTS: 1. SAMPLES OF ARTIST'S WORK 2. BACKGROUND INFORMATION MATERIALS OF ANDY THE DONKEY MAN Recommendation: By Minute Motion, approve the payment of honorariums in the amount of $2,000 each for artists Terry Allen, W. Stanley Proctor, Dee Clements, and Clay Dahlberg to create models/presentation renderings for a sculpture of "Andy the Donkey Man" sculpture. Funds are available in Account No. 436-4650-454-4001. Executive Summary: The Art in Public Places Commission decided to commission an artist to create a sculpture of "Andy the Donkey Man" to be located at the Palm Desert Visitor Center. Staff was directed to identify artists who work in a realistic manner and bring samples of their work at its May 16, 2007 meeting. At that meeting, Staff was directed to bring additional artists to its June 20th meeting where the four artists were selected to compete for the commission. Once the models and renderings are completed, Council will be asked to choose one artist to create the sculpture in the amount of $250,000. Discussion: At its meeting of January 11, 2007, Council instructed staff to proceed with the commissioning of an artwork that would be site -specific for the Entrada del Paseo site and Visitor Center. The Art in Public Places Commission selected the concept of a sculpture of "Andy the Donkey Man" based upon many of the original principles it adopted for the Entrada del Paseo project. For example, something that honors Palm Desert's history, citizens, art that is children friendly, climbable and touchable, complements and enhances the gardens, (proposed sculpture will be at the south entrance to the Eric Memorial Gardens, inviting people to explore them), and responds to memory lane. The Commission felt that the "Andy the Donkey Man" concept fit many of the original principles and that he represents an important aspect to Palm Desert's history. He gained national attention when Charles Kuralt interviewed him for the television program "On the Road". If approved, Staff will organize and record both an oral and visual history of Andy with local residents that will be incorporated in with the sculpture, which will become an educational tool abo ' a Desert' (I ist /1A A P R and Twedt, ublic Arts Mgr' heila Gilligan, Assistant (Ciiiy Manager Community Services Approval: Carlos "ega, C.
