1. APPROVE the attached Mission Statement for distribution to all City employees.
Discussion
The importance of a mission statement for a city is to describe its fundamental, unique purpose
and answer the question, "Why do we exist?" The City of Palm Desert has invested heavily into
the development of its employees as future leaders of the organization. One aspect of this
commitment is the LEADS leadership program many employees have completed. This group
of LEADS program graduates was provided the opportunity by the City Manger to prepare an
updated City Mission Statement for the City Council's review.
This document was not produced overnight, but took shape over several months and after
several edits, embodies the direction of the LEADS group in defining the City's current
organization culture. The final document is a true representation of employees and the purpose,
values, strategy, and philosophy they deem essential for the City's continued success. The
bottom -up approach in developing this mission statement ensured that it was created with input
from a broad cross section of employees. Staff recommends that the City Council approve the
attached City of Palm Desert\ Mission Statement and incorporate it within the organization's
annual budget document, website, and where appropriate.
