PALM DESERT LIBRARY PROMOTION COMMITTEE
JANUARY 17, 2007 — 3:00 P.M.
ADMINISTRATIVE CONFERENCE ROOM
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chairwoman Beasley called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.

IV. CONSENT CALENDAR
A. MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF FEBRUARY 15, 2006
Joan Beasley moved to, by Minute Motion, approve the minutes of the February 15,
2006, meeting. Motion was seconded by Barbara Rosenberg and carried 5-0.
V. NEW BUSINESS
A. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE CHAIR AND VICE -CHAIR
Ms. Beasley moved to, by Minute Motion, appoint Louise Kermode as
Chairwoman for 2007. Motion was seconded by Betty Carapellese and carried 5-0.
Ella Manor moved to, by Minute Motion, appoint Ms. Beasley as Vice -
Chairwoman for 2007. Motion was seconded by Ms. Rosenberg and carried 5-0.

VIII. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. Council Member Jean Benson
Upon question by Ms. Kays, Mayor ProTem Benson responded that the
process of acquiring the COD Library building would take two to three
years.
B. Librarian's Report (Jeannie Kays)
Jeannie Kays distributed the updated October, November, and December
2006, Library statistics. The Library's January and February 2007,
schedule of programs, was also distributed. She reported on the Children
and Teen Programs as well.
She announced that the Friends of the Library acquired a movie license
agreement, which will allow the Library to show movies in the Community
Room. She said additional speakers would need to be purchased and/or
the sound system upgraded in the Community Room.
The number of volunteers has increased dramatically. Volunteer, Harriet
Oberhaus has been helping with the shut-in program and the number of
books going out to that sector of the population has increased as well.
The bookmobile was doing well. The Learning Tree has begun class
fieldtrips to the bookmobile.
Upon question by Lawrence Guzzetta, Ms. Kays responded that the
Library's monthly programs were distributed to the senior center and the
visitor center. She said the main source of information was contained in
the Bright Side. The information was also available on the Library's
website.
A discussion was held regarding the cost of mailing program brochures to
residents of Palm Desert. These mailings would be in addition to the
Bright Side.
Ms. Kays gave an overview of a new program at the Library called, "Hot
Off The Press." A piece of furniture was requested to display the books
when they arrive. Ms. Beasley stated that the Friends of the Library
would pay for the furniture.

C. Event and Volunteer Coordinator's Report (Mary Arnold)
None
D. Budget Review Group (Ella Manor/Betty Carapellese)
Ms. Klassen announced that it was time to begin reviewing the Library's
2007/2008 fiscal year budgets.
Betty Carapellese, Lawrence Guzzetta, and Ella Manor were selected to
serve on the Budget Committee.
E. Friends of the Palm Desert Library (Joan Beasley)
Ms. Beasley distributed and gave an overview of the Friends of the
Library 2006 Financial Report.
Twenty new members have joined the Friends of the Library in the last
two months.
The Internet folks were seeking volunteers to help research and enter
books on the Friends website.
F. Committee Chair (Joan Beasley)
Ms. Beasley congratulated Louise Kermode on becoming the 2007
Library Committee Chair.
She attended the Desert Friends meeting, which was held at the
Thousand Palms Library. The Librarians were planning a day in March to
honor all of the volunteers at all of the valley libraries.
G. Committee Members

H. Staff
Ms. Klassen announced that Lynn DeSantis decided that she would not
renew her term as a Committee member. Applications can be mailed or
picked up at the Administration Office at City Hall.
