SUBMITTED BY: DONNA GOMEZ, VISITOR CENTER MANAGER DATE: MARCH 22, 2007 Recommendation: By Minute Motion, permit the possession and serving of alcohol in connection with the Leadership Coachella Valley Alumni Association reception to be held at the Palm Desert Visitor Center, March 28, 2007. Background: The Leadership Coachella Valley Alumni Association now has over 200 members that meet on a regular basis for educational and social events. They have requested the Visitor Center be the host site of their next event, which will focus on "green" buildings. The association will have two speakers on this topic and plan to serve food, beer, wine and sodas for approximately 60 to 70 participants. The City of Palm Desert's Visitor Center, being a Silver LEEDs certified building, provides a great venue to showcase the City's efforts in the area of sustainable development. The full curriculum touches on all aspects of our valley. What you may not know is that program graduates now number over 200! These graduates have formed the Leadership Alumni Association and hold 2-3 events per year — both educational and social. The next event, which we hope to hold at the Palm Desert Visitor Information Center, will have a "green" theme. Developer Ted Lennon, CEO of Lowe Enterprises, will be one speaker. He is developing energy efficient homes. The other speaker, yet to be named, will be either an architect of "green" buildings or a person affiliated with the California Green Builder (CGB) Program. We are awaiting confirmation of the second speaker. The Visitor Center is perfect for the venue since it is a showcase of the "green" theme - filled with renewable products for cabinetry, flooring, countertops, etc. In additional to holding the event there, we would like you to provide a brief overview of your building as part of the program.
