TWEDT NOVEMBER 8, 2007 1. ARTIST INFORMATION 2. SAMPLES OF PREVIOUS ARTWORKS Recommendation: By Minute Motion, approve honorariums in the amount of $2,000 to each artist. Funds are available in Account No. 436-4650-454-3010. Executive Summary: At its meeting of October 17, 2007, the Art in Public Places Commission selected four artists to create models and/or presentation drawings for the "Embracing the Desert Light" project. The proposed "Embracing the Desert Light" project is a partnership between the Redevelopment Agency and the Art in Public Places Commission in conjunction with the revitalization of the El Paseo medians from Highway 111 to Highway 74 and from Portola to Highway 111. The project will be funded using $150,000 from the Public Art fund and $50,000 from the Redevelopment Agency's El Paseo revitalization account. Discussion: At several meetings with design consultants for El Paseo, it was suggested to put some kind of "signifier", banners, signs, etc., in the medians from Hwy 74 and Portola to Hwy 111, which would create a common look to those ends of El Paseo to lead people to the street's main concentration of boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and businesses. The concept of installing permanent, sequential artworks created with common design elements and material on the medians was suggested and accepted by the various participants, i.e. City staff, design consultants, and the Art in Public Places Commission. Staff was instructed by the Art in Public Places Commission to research and identify several artists that work with "light" as their primary medium for the potential project. The Art in Public Places Commission selected four artists from approximately twelve that were presented to them for consideration. Achard Twedt, ublic Arts Mgr.
