STEPHENSON'S BIOGRAPHY Recommendation: By Minute Motion: 1) Approve Mark Stephenson as the curator of the 2008/09 El Paseo Invitational Sculpture Exhibition; 2) award Mr. Stephenson an honorarium in the amount of $10,000. Executive Summary: At its meeting of September 19, 2008, the Art in Public Places Commission selected Mark Stephenson as the curator of the 2008/09 El Paseo Invitational Sculpture Exhibition. The curator receives an honorarium of $10,000 for the position. The Art in Public Places Commission provides $5,000 of the honorarium and the El Paseo Business Improvement District provides the remaining $5,000, once the curator has made the selections for the Exhibition. The El Paseo curator personally visits all the galleries in Palm Desert and the Coachella Valley and invites them to participate requesting sculpture proposals of artists they represent. Also, the curator, staff from the Public Art Department, and members of the Art in Public Places Commission invite independent artists without gallery representation to submit proposals for consideration. The curator selects eighteen finalists for the El Paseo Exhibition, which are presented for approval by the Art in Public Places Commission and City Council. Discussion: Mr. Stephenson is well qualified to curate the 2008/09 Exhibition as he is a professional artist and knows the art community in Palm Desert and Coachella Valley very well. He also is very aware of professional artists in Southern, California as he has maintained an active studio in Sky Valley, California where his work has been exhibited and commissioned. Mr. Stephenson actively travels throughout the United States exhibiting his artwork in prestigious, competitive art festivals and will bring a new perspective to curating the 2008/09 El Paseo Invitational Sculpture Exhibition.
