Chairwoman Sara O'Flynn called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m.

A. MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF JULY 17, 2007
Michael Shimer moved, by Minute Motion, to approve the minutes of the July 17, 2007,
meeting. Motion was seconded by Emily Bird-Hrivnak and carried 4-0.
V. NEW BUSINESS
A. VIRGINIA WARING PIANO COMPETITION
Councilmember Spiegel introduced this item. He stated that the funds requested
would be used for the sponsorship dinner. This year Carlos Ponte', Jr. will be
attending the dinner.

Sheila Gilligan stated that the Virginia Waring Piano Competition has been
around for many years and was a proven benefit to the City of Palm Desert.
Sara O'Flynn moved, by Minute Motion, to approve the $35,000 sponsorship request
from Virginia Waring Piano Competition and recommend that City Council appropriate those
funds. Motion was seconded by Michael Shimer and carried 4-0.
B. 2008 EASTER BOWL JUNIOR TENNIS
Kristy Kneiding introduced this item.
Upon question by Theresa Maggio, Ms. Kneiding stated that the Easter Bowl was
held during spring break so that most kids can participate. It was one of the best
junior tennis tournaments in the country.
Emily Bird suggested that in lieu of the $5,000 sponsorship the Committee could
approve the cost of purchasing the awards for the tournament.
Upon question by Michael Shimer, Ms. Kneiding responded that the organization
pays for tournament workers and volunteer's meals but not the participants.
Sara O'Flynn remarked that the original request was for $15,000 and staff was
recommending $5,000. She was comfortable with a $5,000 sponsorship
amount.
Discussion was held regarding the benefit of supporting the 2008 Easter Bowl
Junior Tennis tournament.
Michael Shimer moved, by Minute Motion, to approve the $5,000 sponsorship and
recommend that City Council appropriate those funds. Motion was seconded by Emily Bird-
Hrivnak and carried 4-0.
C. ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN/SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER MEDIA SCHEDULE
Ms. Kneiding gave an overview of the advertising campaign.
Upon question by Councilmember Spiegel, Ms. Kneiding elaborated on a
meeting with the CVA and an advisory panel of individuals from tourism,
marketing, and advertising agencies throughout the United States. She felt the
meeting was informative and helpful to listen to ideas by individuals out of the
area regarding marketing the Coachella Valley. She also felt it helpful to learn
about the perception of people who live outside the Coachella Valley.
Discussion ensued regarding the advertising campaign and media schedule.
Michael Shimer moved, by Minute Motion, to received and file the Advertising Campaign
September-October Media Schedule. Motion was seconded by Emily Bird-Hrivnak and carried
4-0.

VII. REPORTS FROM CITY COUNCIL LIAISONS

VIII. REPORTS AND REMARKS
A. Chair
Ms. O'Flynn announced the Desert Sampler was returning to The Gardens on
October 9, 2007, from 5— 7:30 p.m.
The Art of Food & Wine's Friday night event was scheduled at The Gardens from
3—6 p.m. Thirty-six stores have signed on to participate.
Ms. O'Flynn reported that J Crew was open and doing well.
B. Committee Members
Mike Osgood reported on Lorena Ochoa Day. He said she was gracious and the
kids had a great time with her at the golf clinic.
The Mayor's Challenge Golf Tournament was scheduled for Sunday, September
23, 2007. The cost to enter the tournament was $100 per team (team included
one adult and one junior golfer) with proceeds going towards the Youth Council.
The Palm Desert Youth Committee members would be volunteering at the
tournament and participants can have their pictures taken with the Mayor of Palm
Desert.
Desert Willow was named one of the top 50 golf courses in the United States.
The course was listed as environmentally friendly and a great course for female
golfers.
Ms. Bird-Hrivnak announced the grand opening of "The Spa" at the Marriott. It
will be held on October 4, 2007, invitations have been sent.
Ms. Maggio announced home tours at BIGHORN would be held in November.
Also, the golf shop and pool areas were going through renovation.
Ms. Maggio reported that Nicole Castrale would be meeting with the media at
BIGHORN regarding her debut at the Samsung World Championship
tournament. She was also featured on the cover of 92260 Magazine.
Mr. Shimer announced the addition of seating in the bar area of Tommy
Bahama's and renovation of the outside patio eating areas were taking place.

C. Staff
Ms. Kneiding announced that Nancy J. Friedman Public Relations Agency was
doing a great job for the City of Palm Desert. Representatives from the agency
would be in Palm Desert next week and she will be meeting with them.
Ms. Gilligan gave an update on the status of the Art of Food & Wine event.
Piper Close gave an overview of ongoing and upcoming projects regarding
media and advertising.
IX. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS
1. Visitor Information Center Activity Report
Ms. Kneiding reviewed the VIC Activity Report with the Committee.
2. California Travel and Tourism Commission
Ms. Kneiding announced that a conference on travel and tourism would
be held at the Palm Springs Convention Center and encouraged all
committee members to attend.
X. ADJOURNMENT
With Committee concurrence, the meeting was adjourned at 3:10 p.m.
