HomeMy WebLinkAboutSR - 9th Annual Turkey Trot - 11/22/07XK CITY OF PALM DESERT COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT STAFF REPORT REQUEST: REQUEST FOR AUTHORIZATION of ninth annual "Turkey Trot" DATE: October 25, 2007 CONTENTS: Correspondence from Desert Cities Track Club Route Map Correspondence from El Paseo Business Association Recommendation: By Minute Motion, (1) authorize the Desert Cities Track Club to stage their ninth annual "Turkey Trot" on Thursday, November 22, 2007 (Thanksgiving Day), from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and (2) authorize fee waiver for traffic control personnel in return for event sponsorship. Executive Summary: Each year the Desert Cities Track Club hosts a "Turkey Trot" for its members on Thanksgiving morning and for the ninth year has requested that it be held on El Paseo. Background: The Desert Cities Track Club has requested that El Paseo from Prickly Pear to Ocotillo and Ocotillo from El Paseo to Grapevine be closed from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 22, 2007, (Thanksgiving Day), to hold the ninth annual "Turkey Trot" to benefit Palm Desert High School through the awarding of academic scholarships. Representatives of the City's Public Works Department, Fire Department, and Police Department, as well as the El Paseo Business Association, have had an opportunity to address any concerns with regard to public safety, traffic, and other issues and event organizers have received their endorsement of this activity along with their approval to close the street between Prickly Pear and Ocotillo for a maximum two hour period (copy of correspondence attached.) In meeting with staff representatives all concerns were addressed and the route and event were approved as submitted by event organizers provided they make appropriate provisions for sanitation and coning and notify residents along Ocotillo in writing at least thirty days in advance of the event of their intent to hold this activity on Thanksgiving moming. This request is identical to the one submitted by the Desert Cities Track Club for the past several years and all provisions of the special event permit were adhered to as requested. Due to increased participation, the Palm Desert Police Department is requiring two traffic officers be assigned to this event. In return for being recognized in all publicity as an event sponsor, the organizers are requesting a waiver of fees for this service which is valued at $500.00. Therefore, staff recommends approval of this event sponsored and produced by the Desert Cities Track Club on Thursday, November 22, 2007, (Thanksgiving Day), authorize the closure of El Paseo from Prickly Pear to Ocotillo and Ocotillo from El Paseo to Grapevine from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., and waive fees for traffic officers in the amount of $500.00 in return for the City being recognized as an event sponsor.
