HomeMy WebLinkAboutPrsntn - Ntl Child Abuse Prvntn Whereas, each year more than three million children are reported as abused or neglected in the United States; and Whereas, three children die each dayfrom abuse and neglect in this country and among confirmed cases of child maltreatment at least 60% involve the use of alcohol or other drugs; and Whereas, children who come into the child welfare system because of abuse, neglect and/or substance-abusing parents are found to have increasingly complex health service needs, including serious health problems, such as prenatal substance exposure, which can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome, developmental delays, and HIV disease; and Whereas, educational efforts supported by communities and individuals throughout the Coachella Valley are vital to the task of increasing public awareness of the harmful relationship between substance abuse and child abuse, and their effects upon the children and families of our communitie� and Whereas, child abuse and neglect is a community problem and finding solutions depends on the involvement of people throughout the community. The National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse has proclaimed the month of April and National Child Abuse Prevention month; and Now, Therefore, I, Jean M. Benson, Mayor of the City of Palm Desert, California, Do Hereby Proclaim April 2008, as National Child Abuse Prevention Month in the City of Palm Desert and encourage the residents of our city to support child abuse prevention activities in our desert communities and schools during this month and throughout the year. The Pravent Child Abusa theme for this year's campaign is "It Happens to Boys." Statistics document that Riverside County 1 out of every 4 girls and 1 out of every 6 boys will suffer child abuse by the time they're 18 years of age and boys greatly under report abuse. We want our families and communities to know the facts and to provide open channels of Board of Directors communication with our children in order to keep them safe.
