REQUEST:
GOVERNOR'S PROPOSED 2008-2009 BUDGET
DATE: April 24, 2008
CONTENTS: RESOLUTION NO. 08-25
SUBMITTED BY: Carlos L. Ortega, City Manager
Recommendation:
APRPOVAL OF RESOLUTION NO. 08-25 IN OPPOSITION TO
That the City Council, by Minute Motion, adopt Resolution 08-25 in opposition to the
governor's proposed 2008-2009 budget.
Background: Governor Schwarzenegger's proposed $4.4 billion cut to education funding
in 2008-2009 translates to $13.4 million for our school district. Desert Sands is proud of its
academic achievements over the past few years. For years, the District has been recognized
as the Lighthouse District, lauded for visionary thinking, solid student achievement, and
programs that address the many needs of students and their families.
Funding cuts to our schools will result in a negative economic impact to the desert economy,
at a time when they need support for education the most. The District has made great strides
in preparing students for work and college after graduation. The District has dramatically
lowered student dropout rates in its schools, and they offer diverse programs to keep students
and their families committed to education. Well educated students translate into better
employees and more productive tax payers. In addition, possible layoffs of education
employees will have a direct negative impact on the desert economy. Reduced funding for
local education will hurt all of us, not just those directly involved with schools.
