Discussion: On July 18, 2008, sealed bids were opened for the refurbishment of "Desert Star" and "Desert Flower" artwork located at 73-710 Fred Waring Drive. Imperial Signs $14,995 Group Two Graphics $25,600 Michael Volpone $26,400 After reviewing the bid proposals and references, staff recommends that the bid be awarded to the lowest bidder, Imperial Signs. Executive Summary: "Desert Star" and "Desert Flower", an artwork in the City of Palm Desert's public art collection located at 73-710 Fred Waring Drive (two story building near City Hall), is in need of refurbishing. Currently the artwork needs to be repainted, sanded, prisms replaced, and the existing prisms need to be buffed and polished. Each of the eight metal sculptures will be disassembled and refurbished. After each sculpture has been repaired and repainted they will then be reassembled and remounted in original atrium areas of the Park View office building located at 73-710 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert. Each unit will be sanded and prepped for painting in the original red color. Each unit will have all UV acrylic prisms buffed or replaced to their original condition. All bearings will be cleaned and lubricated. Each unit will then be replaced in their original location. Klassen, City Clerk City of Palm Desert Proposal to refurbish Desert Star and Desert Flower an artwork in the City of Palm Desert's Public Art Collection 1 Remove red elements from eight separate structures at county/city buildings. (Desert Star and Desert Flower) 2. Transport red elements to work shop to be prepped for paint. • Sand pieces to be painted • Prime each piece to be painted • Paint all elements with red automotive base color- 2 coats • Spray UV protective clear coat on all red elements — 2 coats 3. Transport pieces back to city building for installation 4. Remove all acrylic prisms and replace with new material (there are missing and damaged pieces -better to replace all) Also replace missing mounting screws 5. Scrub aluminum structures 6. Clean and lubricate interface bearings Proposal includes all expenses for materials, equipment rentals and supplies. Total of eight structures - each structure will be $3,300 to dismantle, transport, paint, Lubricate, reinstall elements, replace and repair prisms. Project total $26,400.00
