This memorandum is intended to update the members of the City Council on the status
of development of a sustainability plan for the City of Palm Desert. One of the three-
year strategic goals adopted by the City Council in 2008 is to be recognized as a leader
in energy efficiency and sustainability. In June of this year, a six-month objective was
identified to present to the City Council by December, 2008 a sustainability plan for
consideration. This memorandum provides an update on the work towards that
objective.
EcoMotion was retained by the City in July 2008 to coordinate the development of the
eight elements of the sustainability plan, including: energy and water conservation;
greenhouse gas reduction; diversion of waste from landfills; implementation of green
building standards; preservation of open space; development of transportation options;
and increased use of recycled, renewable, and locally produced materials. Under that
contract, EcoMotion met with a working committee of key department heads to identify
specifically the required tasks, and to produce a working plan and timeline for producing
the sustainability plan.
A draft schedule has been prepared that incorporates provisions for staff and
community technical input, and milestone dates for work products for each of the eight
elements of the plan. The draft schedule calls for the completion of all work by June,
2009. It is staffs intent to provide for the City Council a firm schedule and work plan for
preparation of the sustainability plan at the January 8, 2009, City Council meeting.
