Background: At its meeting of November 12, 2008, the Palm Desert Public Safety Commission recommended that the City Council approve an expenditure of $2,482.78 in combined J.A.G. Grant and Cal COPS Funds to purchase five Fujitsu SCANSNAP F510 Instant PDF Sheet Feed Scanners. As law enforcement in the 21St century becomes increasingly digital, handling documents, distribution of information, and communication as it exists today, makes storage, emailing and sharing of documents in an electronic format fast, easy, convenient and efficient. This technology also promotes the conservation of paper products and associated materials. The City of Palm Desert has received $16,956 through the Edward Byrne Memorial-Ju ti e Assistance Grant for fiscal year 07/08. J.A.G. Technology exists today that make storage, emailing and sharing of documents in electronic format fast, easy and convenient. The days of three-ring binders, filing cabinets and storage of paper reports are fading with the advent of new technology. This technology also promotes conservation of paper products and associated materials. Using digital scanners, government and private businesses can email documents, store them digitally and reduce the reliance on paper. This also contributes to a more earth friendly or"green" approach to our environment. The Palm Desert Police Department requests authorization to expend $2,482.78 in combined J.A.G. Grant and CAL Cops funds to purchase five (5) Fujitsu Scansnap 5510 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Scanners. The scanners would be distributed to the Palm Desert Police Departments' dedicated Sheriff's Lieutenant and four dedicated Sheriff's Sergeants. COST ANALYSIS The City of Palm Desert was authorized $16,956.00 through the Edward Byrne Memorial-Justice Assistance Grant (J.A.G.) for fiscal year 2007/08. That grant included the specific purchase of thirty (30) Olympus Digital Voice Recorders for use by our patrol and dedicated officers as well as the purchase of two (2) Segway Electronic Personal Assistive Mobility Devices (EPAMD's). Those purchases have been made and there remains $1,127.63 in J.A.G. funds available for use. CAL Cops funds will be used for the remainder of the purchase. The total cost for this purchase is $2,482.78; including t� (shipping is free). J.A.G. grant funds (account # 229-4210-422-3916) will be used for $1,127.63 of the purchase. 1 The remaining $1,355.15 in cost will be taken from CAL Cops funds (account #229- 4210-422-3914).
