HomeMy WebLinkAboutHonorariums Embracing the Desert Light Project CITY OF PALM DESERT COMMUNITY SERVICES STAFF REPORT REQUEST: CONSIDERATION TO APPROVE HONORARIUMS FOR ARTISTS PHILLIP SMITH AND GREG REICHE FOR THE "EMBRACING THE DESERT LIGHT" PROJECT SUBMITTED BY: RICHARD L. TWEDT DATE: DECEMBER 11, 2008 CONTENTS: 1. ARTIST INFORMATION 2. SAMPLES OF PREVIOUS ARTWORKS Recommendation: By Minute Motion, approve honorariums in the amount of $2,000 to each artist. Funds are available in Account No. 436-4650-454-3010. Executive Summary: At its meeting of November 19, 2008 the Art in Public Places Commission selected two additional artists to create models and/or presentation drawings for the "Embracing the Desert Light" project. The proposed "Embracing the Desert Light" project is a partnership between the Redevelopment Agency and the Art in Public Places Commission in conjunction with the revitalization of the EI Paseo medians from Highway 111 to Highway 74 and from Portola to Highway 111. The project will be funded using $150,000 from the Public Art fund and $50,000 from the Redevelopment Agency's EI Paseo revitalization account. Discussion: City Council approved honorariums to four artists for the project at its November 17, 2007 meeting. Only three of the four artists chose to participate with proposals in the invitational competition. After reviewing the proposals submitted by the artists several months later, the Art in Public Places Commission decided two additional artists were needed to create proposals for the project in order to provide the City Council with a wider range of artists' proposals from which to choose. Staff was instructed by the Art in Public Places Commission to develop a "pool" of artists that work with "light" as their primary medium. Over 200 artists responded to the RFQ and the Art in Public Places Commission selected two artists from the "pool" to create proposals for the project. ` - ichard Twedt, Public Arts Mgr. Sheila Gilligan, Assistan ty Mgr.
