Improvement Program Technician to travel outside the state to attend the "Public
Works Project Management Bootcamp" training in Mesa, Arizona on February 7-
8, 2008.
Discussion:
It is necessary for Public Works personnel involved in capital improvement projects to develop
and maintain the knowledge and skills needed for effective project management. The
American Public Works Association, in conjunction with PSMJ Resources, Inc., offers a two-
day course designed to polish these skills. Due to the minimal window of time allowed to
register for this course, the City Manager's approval was obtained for the City's Capital
Improvement Program Technician to attend this training in Mesa, Arizona, in February. The
two-day conference fee $1,195; with approximately $950 for travel-related expenses (mileage,
hotel, meals, and incidentals), the estimated total cost is $2,145. Funds are available in the
Public Works Conference/SeminarsNVorkshops Account No. 110-4300-413-3120.
Therefore, staff recommends that City Council, by minute motion, ratify the City Manager's
authorization for the Capital Improvement Program Technician to travel to Mesa, Arizona to
attend the referenced training.

INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
To: Carlos L. Ortega, City Manager
From: Mark Greenwood, P.E., Director of Public Worics
Date: January 16, 2008
Subject: Authorization far Out-of-State Travel
The Public Works Department would like to send a staff inember, Capital Improvement
Projects Technician Cora Salas, to the Public Works Project Management Bootcamp,
beginning on February 8 in Phoenix,Arizona.
Core learning objectives of the training inctude project scoping, scheduling, budgeting,
risk analysis and project acceptance and close-out. The costs associated with such
training are estimated at $2300. This cost includes the training course registration,
hotel, meals, and mileage reimbursement. The Public Works Department considers
this training to be well worth the cost to fhe City.
Due to the narrow window of time, it is impossible to obtain City Council permission for
this out-of-state travel. The Public Works Department therefore requests your
authorization for Cora Salas to travel out-of-state to Phoenix,Arizona for the purpose of
attending Public Works Project Management Bootcamp beginning on February 8.
If you concur, please indicate your approval below.
