APPROVE the Proposal by Air Cleaning Systems (Pomona, CA) in the amount of $140,797.48 to install the PlymoVent Diesel Exhaust Capturing System at Fire Station No. 33, Fire Station No. 67, and Fire Station No. 71. Funds are available from the New Construction Tax Fund account 231-4220-422-4001. Discussion: The Palm Desert Fire Department requests the installation of the PlymoVent Diesel Exhaust Capturing System at the three City Fire Stations (Fire Stations No. 33, 67, and 71). The PlymoVent system is a hose on an overhead track rail structure that connects to the exhaust of the fire apparatus, in capturing and expelling virtually 100% of the diesel exhaust emissions through a built-in ventilation filtering system. Nearly all the Fire Department's fleet operates on diesel fuel, the emission of which are being expelled into the work and living quarters of the fire station. In an effort to mitigate firefighter exposure to these diesel emissions, the Fire Department is requesting installing of this exhaust capturing at all current and future City Fire Stations. The Fire Department is indicating that PlymoVent is the standard for Riverside County Fire Department stations and is a sole source vendor. They are unique from competitor systems in providing a pneumatic collar attaching to the vehicle. The pneumatic collars are specifically designed for the PlymoVent Exhaust System resulting in compatibility and fleet standardization. Fire personnel assert that other vendors' venting systems will include additional retrofitting of apparatus or facilities resulting in increased costs. When Mutual Aid coverage is needed or provided between jurisdictions, the system and design features are compatible for use between these Fire Departments.
