COLOR CATALOGUE OF THE 2009/10 EL PASEO
INVITATIONAL EXHIBITION
By Minute Motion: 1) Accept and approve the 18 sculptures for the 2009/10 El Paseo
Invitational Exhibition; 2) Approve $2,575 honorariums for each of the participating
artists. Funds are available in account number 436-4650-454-4002.
Executive Summary:
The Art in Public Places Commission unanimously approved the eighteen selections for
the 2009/10 El Paseo Invitational Exhibition by curator Mark Stephenson at its meeting
of June 18, 2008.
Mr. Stephenson has spent the past several months researching artists for the
Exhibition. There were approximately 200 entries from professional artists and artist's
representatives, both nationally and internationally. These 18 artists are Mr.
Stephenson's selections that represent the highest quality and artistic achievement from
the entries. Mr. Stephenson has consulted with several of the artists who have agreed
to create special artworks for the Exhibition.
Discussion:
A new El Paseo Invitational Exhibition is installed every two years in Palm Desert and
has become a premier venue for professional artists to exhibit their artwork to
multitudes of tourists, visitors, and residents of Palm Desert and the Coachella Valley.
Each exhibition is curated by an art professional who is selected and approved by the
Art in Public Places Commission and City Council.
This is an exhibition that reflects a professional artist's aesthetics and standards of
construction, fabrication, and integrity of materials. It is anticipated to challenge, delight,
and provide visual enjoyment for the citizens and visitors of Palm Desert for the next
two years. Mr. Stephenson deserves our appreciation for the serious and dedicated job
he has done for the Art in Public Places Commission and the City of Palm Desert.

The 2009/10 El Paseo Invitational Sculpture Exhibition
Respectfully Submitted By Mark Stephenson
Sponsored by the City of Palm Desert’s Art in Public Places Commission
Curatorial Selections
Curatorial Statement:
Respectfully,
Mark StephensonJune 17, 2008
It was as much an honor to be asked to curate the 2009-2010 El Paseo Exhibition, as it was a challenge and
great joy to actually do it.
The sheer number of entries and the creativity, humor, skill, intellect, aesthetic, sophistication, insight,
dedication and quality reflected in the submissions is refreshing evidence that the contemporary sculptural art
scene is vibrant and thriving.
The exhibition embraces artists that include internationally celebrated masters of the contemporary art world,
promising young graduates of the best fine arts academies, seasoned self taught fringe artists, gifted
independent festival artists, and phenomenal African stone sculptors.
The exhibited artworks are hewn from a veritable cornucopia of media: stone, steel (distressed, painted,
sanded, rusted plate), recycled rusted iron wheels, aluminum (painted, sanded, hammered, cast), ceramics,
granite, glass, and bronze.
The works could be associated with categories as diverse as their creator’s career situations and the media of
their realization. Figurative, abstract, representational, primitive, conceptual, surrealistic, visual/perceptual are
all appropriate descriptors.
Above all, it is my hope that the 2009-2010 El Paseo Exhibition will be appreciated and celebrated as the
playful, thought provoking, humorous, inspirational, and world class survey of contemporary sculpture I believe
it is!
