HomeMy WebLinkAboutC27920 - Recycled Water Filtration Systm @ DWContract No. C27920 REQUEST: SUBMITTED BY: DATE: Recommendation: CITY OF PALM DESERT STAFF REPORT AUTHORIZE THE CITY MANAGER TO AWARD BIDS FOR THE RECYCLED WATER FILTRATION SYSTEM AT DESERT WILLOW DAVE YRIGOYEN, DIRECTOR OF REDEVELOPMENT/HOUSING JULY 10, 2008 By Minute Motion, that the City Council authorize: 1. The City Manager to award bids for the recycled water filtration system at Desert Willow, appropriating said bid amount from Fund 241-4195- 495-8092. Discussion: The Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) has recently informed us that we will be accepting water supplied from the All American Canal. The water will be transported through the Mid Valley Pipeline by the end of July. This line will bring All American Canal water to the plant at Cook Street and will be blended with existing recycled water. The canal water has a higher concentration of silt and dissolved soils. Even though CVWD has a retention basin to allow for settling, we are unsure as to what degree of settling will take place prior to water delivery. The higher concentration of silt and dissolved solids will affect the performance of sprinkler nozzles and drip irrigation emitters. This down turn in performance will negatively impact sprinkler uniformity and distribution performance of emitters, ultimately resulting in poor turf quality, plant loss, and higher labor costs. The negative impact of this water can be alleviated by adding filtration units at the recycled water pump station at Desert Willow Golf Resort. We are currently awaiting test results of the water, which will allow us to properly size the mesh screens for the filtration units. We can then complete specifications for the bidding process. It is estimated that the cost for this filtration unit and installation will be in the $80,000 range.
