RATIFY the City Manager's approval for the purchase of three Stryker Power Assist Gurney systems. 2. Appropriate $37,367.72 from the Unobligated Fund 230 for the purchase of three Stryker Power Assist Gurney systems Discussion: The Fire Department currently has five Ferno Gurneys in service for the City of Palm Desert. Three of these gurneys are in ambulance units, while the remaining two are on reserve apparatus. The Palm Desert Fire Department recently requested the immediate purchase of three Stryker Power Assist Gurney Systems to replace the existing non - reserve gurneys. These gurneys are over ten years old, require extensive maintenance, and are showing signs of fatigue. The Stryker Power Assist Gurney system is more rugged and has a weight capacity of 700 pounds. These aluminum reinforced gurneys operate via a hydraulic system, which raises and lowers the gurneys at the touch of a button. The gurney also has a back-up system in case of a mechanical failure that allows it to function manually. As these gurneys are showing signs of failure, the City Manager authorized the immediate purchase of the three Stryker Gurneys. Please note that the invoice indicates an expedite fee, so these systems will be delivered into service as soon as possible. As new ambulance unit were purchased in the past, the gurneys were not part of the replacement package. Some of these gurneys are ten years old, and have recently been plagued with maintenance issues. The gurneys are currently serviced every three months, and sometimes sooner, instead of the usual six months due to there high use and aging frames. This is costing the City of Palm Desert approximately $200.00 per gurney per service. The city has four gurneys that are maintained, one for each of the ambulance unit and a spare as a back up. The cost of one firefighter being critically injured, due to a gurney failing, would more than pay to outfit the cities ambulance fleet with new gurneys. Not to mention the pain and suffering and stress it would cause an employee, and having to fill behind this individual on the work schedule. There have also been documented close calls, with gurneys failing while patients have been on them. We have been very lucky there, has not been any serious injuries sustained by a patient. A significant issue of this sort would only bring the department bad publicity and unwanted litigation issues. Currently there are two Stryker Power Assist Gurneys in service in two different communities. They have had a positive impact, on the firefighter's safety, and also the communities they serve in. This new gurney is much more rugged and durable and has a life expectance of approximately six years, depending on there use. It has a weight capacity of 700 pounds and is built of reinforced aluminum. The unique mechanism of this gurney is its hydraulic power. With a touch of a control button, the gurney can be lowered or raised in a controlled fashion, with a firefighter assisting with 10% of the patient's weight, preventing injuries. The unit is powered by a 24volt DeWalt battery that rotated as needed onto a battery charger. The gurney has a back system in case of a mechanical problem; it's equipped with a manual lever. The lever allows the gurney to function fully automatic and does not compromise the safety of the patient or the firefighter. It's with the up most importance, that the City of Palm Desert purchase three power assist gurneys as soon as possible to replace the current aging gurneys. Attached is a quote for the purchase of three gurneys along with a preventive maintenance package.
