STAFF REPORT
Receive and File Informational Report Regarding Additional Bike Lanes
on Various Streets Throughout Palm Desert
Mark Greenwood, P.E., Director of Public Works
March 13, 2008
Recommendation:
Receive and file.
Discussion:
At the February 21, 2008 City Council budget session, staff presented a map of potential
locations where bike lanes could be installed. City Council indicated a desire to install additional
bike lanes where possible and directed staff to proceed. Since that time, Highway 74 has been
relinquished to the City of Palm Desert; therefore, installation of bike lanes on Highway 74 is
timely. The street segments where bike lanes are to be added include:
• Highway 74 from El Paseo to the city limit
• Deep Canyon Road from Highway 111 to Fred Waring Drive
• Hovley Lane East from Cook Street to Water Way
• Frank Sinatra Drive/Tamarisk Row from Cook Street to Country Club Drive
• Frank Sinatra Drive from Monterey Avenue to Portola Avenue
• Portola Avenue from Frank Sinatra Drive to Gerald Ford Drive
• Gateway Drive from Avenue 35 to Dinah Shore Drive
The above represents over nine additional miles of bike lanes added to Palm Desert's already
extensive bike lane system. It should be noted that parking must be restricted on all of these
segments in order to accommodate the bike lanes. Of special concern are the segment of
Highway 74 near St. Margaret's Episcopal Church and Palm Desert Presbyterian Church, where
on -street parking does frequently occur; and the segment on Deep Canyon between Highway
111 and Fred Waring Drive where on -street parking also occurs and the affected business
owners have previously objected to the loss of parking in favor of the bike lane.
