Approval of the "Wanding" sign design, and 2. Appropriate $100,000 from the General Fund for the "Wayfinding program", and 3. Appropriate a 10% contingency of $10,000 for the "Wayfinding Program", and 4. Authorize staff to solicit bids for the fabrication of the "Wanding" signs. Discussion: The Public Works Department facilitated a committee composed of various staff members from Public Works, Visitor Information Center, Business Support and Marketing to develop a "Wanding Program" for the City. The program consists of replacing the existing brown directional signs throughout the City with larger, more attractive, signs. The committee also updated locations that visitors will be directed to. The existing directional signs are outdated in terms of content and appearance. Numerous locations have needed smaller signs attached to a main sign to reflect added attractions such as the new Cal State campus and Visitor Center. In addition, the current brown signs are fading due to the type of finish and age. The committee met approximately six times over a 6 month period to determine sign content and decided to restrict the signs to regional attractions and public facilities. The Living Desert, EI Paseo, McCallum Theater and the Visitor Center wound up with the largest radius in terms of distance from signs to the location, and eleven other destinations were identified. The committee minimized the number of locations per sign to three, with a few instances where four was necessary. Appropriate Funds and Authorize the Wayfinding Program Page 2 of 2 March 13, 2008 Staff conceptualized a new design for a sign consisting of a jagged top edge simulating a mountain ridgeline integrated with the top of a palm tree. An artist was recommended by the Public Art Department to refine this design, and select suitable colors resulting in the present design consisting of purple mountains above a green background separated by a yellow band simulating the top of a sand dune. Initially lighter shades were selected, but these were rejected due to poor readability after the eventual fading. The committee examined photographs of other wayfinding signs in places such as Long Beach and Santa Monica to determine the best sign format resulting in larger signs with 8 inch upper case letters and 6 inch lower case, compared to the 6 and 4 inch letters on the existing signs. The program is comprised of 67 signs, that would be a maximum 32 square feet, at about $1,500 each. Staff will be used to install the signs. A sign contractor assisted the committee on the design for constructability resulting in the final print attached to the report. Therefore, staff recommends that City Council, by Minute Motion: 1. Approval of the "Wayfinding" sign design, and 2. Appropriate $100,000 from the General Fund for the "Wayfinding program", and 3. Appropriate a 10% contingency of $10,000 for the "Wayfinding Program", and 4. Authorize staff to solicit bids for the fabrication of the "Wayfinding" signs.
