REQUEST: CITY OF PALM DESERT COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT STAFF REPORT CONSIDERATION OF LEGISLATIVE REVIEW COMMITTEE ACTION ON S2109 (Boxer -CA) and HR3682 (Bono -Mack -CA) at its meeting of April 22, 2008 DATE: May 8, 2008 CONTENTS: S2109 and HR3682 Language Memo to City Manager RECOMMENDATION: By Minute Motion, concur with the action taken by the Legislative Review Committee at its meeting of April 22, 2008, and direct staff to prepare a letter of support for the Mayor's signature with regard to S2109 (Boxer) and HR3682 (Bono -Mack) relative to wilderness lands. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Passage of S2109 and HR3682 would designate certain federal lands in Riverside County as wilderness as well as scenic rivers or recreational areas and adjust the boundaries of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument. BACKGROUND: The Wilderness Act of 1964 created a National Wilderness Preservation System and established the definition of wilderness that is still used today. This legislation proposes to designate over 190,000 acres of wildemess, in addition to new areas of the Santa Rosa/San Jacinto National Monument, and designation of 31 miles of wild and scenic rivers in Riverside County. Senator Barbara Boxer and Congresswoman Mary Bono -Mack are authors of their r spective legislation and have requested the City's support.
