CITY OF PALM DESERT
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: Approve Out-of-State Travel for the Capital Improvement Projects
Technician
SUBMITTED BY: Mark Greenwood, P.E., Director of Public Works
DATE: May 8, 2008
CONTENTS: Seminar Description
Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, approve out-of-state travel for the Capital Improvement
Projects Technician to attend the American Public Works Association
International Public Works Congress & Exposition in New Orleans,
Louisiana.
Discussion:
The American Public Works Association's (APWA) annual International Public Works
Congress and Exposition provides exceptional education opportunities for public works
staff. Attendees discover emerging trends, innovative solutions and best practices in
public works. This year's program offers training on several aspects of infrastructure that
the City of Palm Desert has committed to enhancing or preserving. Presented over four
days, sessions will be offered in the areas of utility relocation, right-of-way acquisition,
alternative pedestrian rights of way, storm water management, and water conservation.
The City's Capital Improvement Projects Technician is actively involved in each of these
areas and staff believes it would benefit the City to take advantage of this training
opportunity. Costs for the four-day course are estimated at $2,535.00, which includes
registration, lodging, meals, and airfare). Funds are available in the Public Works
Conference/Seminars/Workshops Account No. 110-4300-413-3120.
