Discussion: The attached resolution sets a public hearing date for June 12, 2008, to consider a street name change for Highway 74 within the city limits. The matter was brought to City Council on April 10 as an informational item and the Council decided to schedule a public hearing to receive public input on the matter. The first step in this process is adoption of a resolution determining the need for a name change and setting a public hearing date. Palm Desert took over control of the route recently, thereby dropping its state highway status. It was requested the name be changed to eliminate a rural connotation associated with a highway number. The city lists 406 addresses on Highway 74 that would be notified of the public hearing. At that hearing, a staff report will be included delineating all relevant considerations and recommendations. Therefore, staff recommends that the City Council adopt the attached Resolution setting a public hearing date for June 12, 2008. There would be unknown costs to the 406 residents for address changing as well as other places that use the name "Highway 74" in their directions, such as clubs and churches.
