CONSENT CALENDAR A. APPROVAL OF THE MARCH 3, 2008, MEETING MINUTES Upon a motion by Member Jenna Scott and second by Member Bryce Griffith, minutes of the March 3, 2008, meeting minutes were approved as presented. Motion carried by unanimous vote. APPROVED MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE APRIL 7, 2008 IV. NEW BUSINESS A. JR/SR GOLF TOURNAMENT — ORAL PRESENTATION BY MIKE OSGOOD This item was continued to the May meeting until the appropriate Federal Agencies approval of the use of Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack's likeness and name has been obtained. The tournament is scheduled for September 21, 2008. Desert Willow's Director of Marketing Mike Osgood and Councilman Dick Kelly will be in attendance at the May meeting to discuss this activity. B. MANDATORY ETHICS TRAINING Pat Scully distributed the correspondence from City Clerk Rachelle Klassen regarding mandatory Ethics Training. In response to questions raised as to the necessity for this training, Ms. Scully reminded the Committee that as appointees of the City Council they were subject to the same rules regulating locally elected officials and State Law AB1234 requires Ethics Training every two years. She added that realizing the schedule established for city staff does not accommodate the school day; there is an opportunity to complete the training online. In response to questions from the Committee, Ms. Scully responded that she was unaware of the timeline. She will obtain that info�mation and communicate that to members of the Committee. V. CONTINUED BUSINESS A. COMMUNITY DISPLAY — ORAL PRESENTATION BY DEBORAH SCHWARTZ Public Art Coordinator Deborah Schwartz addressed the Committee. She advised the Committee that she would be assisting them in the process of developing the Community Display which will be featured in the art gallery at the Palm Desert Visitor Center in July and August of 2009. The Committee should be collecting copies of photographs and articles of activities, projects, and meetings in which they have participated. She encouraged members of the Committee, most particularly Member Scott and Member Kate Hart, to contact her directly at her office if they have any questions regarding the types of things that should be documented for the display. Ms. Scully reminded the Committee that the Youth Resource Guide will debut at a reception announcing this display. 2 APPROVED MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE APRIL 7, 2008 B. POLYNESIAN GARDEN PARTY — REMARKS BY PETER RITTENHOUSE Co-chair Raine Armstrong redistributed Committee assignments for the event scheduled to be held on April 12. Ms. Scully advised that all Committee members should arrive at the Senior Center at 4 p.m. and park on the street. Any Committee member who has not yet turned in their ticket money should do so either at the event or, at the very latest, at the May meeting. Peter Rittenhouse advised that attire should be in keeping with the appropriateness of one meeting his/her own grandparents. C. COMMITTEE PRIORITIES — ORAL REPORT BY COMMITTEE CHAIR ELLE WOHLMUTH Chair Wohlmuth advised that the Committee priorities would be presented to the Committee in June. She added that she has received many great ideas for future projects. VI. OLD BUSINESS None VII. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS A. CITY COUNCIL ISSUES Ms. Scully advised that the budget process for the next fiscal year is underway and will be reviewed by the City Council in the coming month. VIII. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. COMMITTEE MEMBERS Alternate Member Briana Nolan inquired as to whether members not assigned to the Community Display Committee could submit photographs or articles for consideration. Ms. Scully advised that any member who had anything that they believe to be pertinent for display were welcome to bring it to Members Hart and/or Scott. Upon inquiry by Co-chair Armstrong, Ms. Scully responded that alternate members are held to the same attendance requirements as appointed members. Chairwoman Wohlmuth requested that members read the correspondence from City staff more carefully so that an issue, such as occurred last Saturday with the non-participation at the hula lessons, 3 APPROVED MINUTES PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE APRIL 7, 2008 does not occur again. Not following through with scheduled activities reflects poorly on the Committee and on the City as a whole. B. STAFF Ms. Scully reminded the Committee that the May meeting will have several visitors speaking on a variety of subjects and with the request that members plan to arrive early so the meeting could begin on time. Ms. Scully advised that the phone list is still not accurate and will be distributed at the May meeting, one more time, so that it can be finalized. Ms. Scully advised that three seniors will be leaving the Committee due to graduation. Other members should begin recruiting new members. IX. ADJOURNMENT Upon a motion by Member Johnny Rohrbaugh and second by Member Katie Pawelczyk the meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m. Motion carried by unanimous vote.
