University Park West 2. University Park Central 3. University Dog Park 4. University Park East Discussion: On March 4, 2008, the Parks and Recreation Commission voted unanimously to recommend that the following names be used for the four University Parks. 1. University Village Park West 2. University Village Park Central 3. University Village Dog Park 4. University Village Park East These park names were chosen based on the location of parks within the development. The developer of the University Park area requested that the Commission consider an additional recommendation prior to the presentation to the City Council. These names are also based on location. The thought was that because the area is very confusing to drive around in if they all contained "University Park" that the parks would be difficult to find. University Park Names November 20, 2008 Page 2 of 2 Park No. 3, the dog park, and Park No. 4, a neighborhood park, are the two parks scheduled to open on December 13, 2008. Both park No. 3 and No. 4 have intersections at University and College Drives. The names recommended by the developer are: 1. Park No. 1: Tulane 2. Park No. 2: Cambridge 3. Park No. 3 Berkeley or Emory (Dog Park) 4. Park No. 4: Westwood or Wooden (Neighborhood Park to open December 13) On November 4, 2008, the Parks and Recreation Commission considered the developer's recommendation, but felt that there should be a "theme" to the street names. For example: utilize California University or College names. They also felt that until there are housing developments located near the parks, their recommendation remains as requested below, with one change. The "Village" portion of the park title was eliminated. "University Village" is more an indicator of the commercial area, and not the area where the parks are located. The Commission feels that once the housing developments are complete, it may be appropriate to revisit the names and base them on the housing development that they serve. Recommendation: The Parks and Recreation Commission requests that the City Council approve their recommendation that the four University parks be named as follows with an option to revisit in the future. 1. University Park West 2. University Park Central 3. University Dog Park 4. University Park East Submitted By: is Steele Homer Cro, rks and Recreation Services Manager ACM for D el,oi)ment Services Approval: Carlos L. ega City Manager CITY COUNCIL „ACTION : APPROVED '/ DENIED RECEIVED OTHER *CET IN AYES : ABSTAIN VERIF IED BY k51-5K-I rvl G \ DevSertAces \Janis Steele \Word Files \Staff reports \2008 \ Nov 20\ UnivaPitialingsall on File wit City Clerk's 0ffirE Auto Uourt S.F.D. / Town- 5,000 SF S.F.D. 0 us 3,570 SF S.F.D. 7,200 SF Lots (T.T.
