the installation of a wi-fi system at The Gardens on EI Paseo, with service on EI
Paseo extending between Monterey Avenue and Portola Avenue,
Backqround:
At the direction of Gouncil, staff explored the feasibility of a wi-fi system on EI Paseo to provide
guest wireless internet access between Monterey and Portola Avenue. Goforth Technologies of
Indio installed a system that is not visible from EI Paseo and is designed to expand to meet the
future needs of the City. A dual band gateway was installed at The Gardens. Staff is pleased to
report that the wireless connection became operational on November 3, 2008, completing the
first phase of the project.
The next phase is to implement the wireless system from the Gardens outward as agreements
are negotiated and finalized with additional property owners, and is expected to take six to
twelve months to complete. Part of this process is to incorporate liability and usage of rooftops
into the agreement, and to achieve an agreement that is acceptable to all parties.
Information regarding the type of equipment used is included in the attached proposal. It is
expected that as the system expands, Goforth Technologies will continue to provide the
equipment and install as appropriate.

Project Name: EL PASEO DRIVE—WiFi mesh network with Microwave
Backhaul
Scope: Build a 2.4Gh WiFi mesh system, with Microwave Backhaul Links,
providing guest WiFi services from Monterey Avenue to Portola Street
the length of EI Paseo Drive. System is designed to expand to meet
the needs of the City of Palm Desert.
Process: Install one SkyPilot Dual Band Gateway at The Gardens (green
marker), install 2 Sky Pilot Extenders, one at each yellow marker,
install one Sky Pilot Access Unit at each purple marker. Configure
network to deliver connection to the Intemet backhaul site (TBD).
Note: marker placement is estimate and subject to change in order to
insure quality coverage
