CALL TO ORDER Committee Chair Elle Wohlmuth called the meeting to order at 11:01 a.m. II. PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE SEPTEMBER 6, 2008, APPROVED MINUTES IV. CONSENT CALENDAR A. APPROVAL OF THE JULY 7, 2008, MEETING MINUTES Upon a motion by Member Jonny Rohrbaugh and second by Member Raine Armstrong minutes of the July 7, 2008, meeting was approved as presented. Motion carried by unanimous vote. V. NEW BUSINESS None VI. CONTINUED BUSINESS SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATES A. Pat Scully— Kelly's Open Pat Scully collected the commitment letter previously distributed and will be in touch by mail with each Committee member's assignment for the day of the event. B. Bryce Griffith — Comm Wreath Lighting Ceremony Member Bryce Griffith reported that additional activities will be added to the children's area at this event. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, December 5, 2008, from 5-7 p.m. at the Visitor Information Center. Sign- up sheets for these activities will be distributed at a subsequent meeting. C. Antonia Gutierrez— Debate Member Toni Gutierrez reported that in lieu of a political debate, she is researching the possibility of inviting youth from the community to discuss issues of concern with members of the Youth Committee. She stated that she was considering the possibility of organizing some type of a recreational activity to add enjoyment to the event. D. Elle Wohlmuth — Safe House of the Desert Chairwoman Wohlmuth requested a volunteer to serve as co-chair of this sub-committee. Member Griffith volunteered. Chair Wohlmuth reported that she was just beginning to investigate how the Committee can become involved with Safe House of the Desert and will provide a report at subsequent meetings. E. Kate Hart— Community Display Member Kate Hart reported that she continues to take photographs of committee activities and requested that Ms. Scully set up a meeting with 2 PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE SEPTEMBER 6, 2008, APPROVED MINUTES Community Art Coordinator Deborah Schwartz so that she could begin the process of arranging the photos for display. The display is scheduled for the months of July and August at the Visitor Information Center Art Gallery. F. Jonny Rohrbaugh —Activity w/ Senior Center Member Rohrbaugh advised that this year's activity will be a game night at the Senior Center and asked Ms. Scully to set up a meeting with Joslyn Senior Center Executive Director Peter Rittenhouse and himself to begin to define activities, time parameters, and other specifics. G. Briana Nolan — Golf Tournament Member Briana Nolan reported that this activity was covered earlier in the meeting. H. Raine Armstrong — City Sponsored Events, Activities, and Programs Member Armstrong reviewed the list of upcoming City sponsored events in which the Youth Committee has asked to participate. He will collect the list of proposed activities at the next meeting to begin defining the role volunteers will play in each activity. I. Alison McCollister— Middle School Mentoring Program Member Alison McCollister reported that she would begin the Middle School Youth Engagement Committee meetings next Friday. These meetings will be held from 4:30 — 5 p.m. on the second Friday of each month and members interested in participating should contact her. J. Abby Sturgeon — New Member Mentoring Member Abby Sturgeon reported that she will be greeting new members and advising those in attendance who are new to the Committee to contact her if they have any questions regarding the activities or proceedings of the Committee. She also offered to contact those individuals as well. Ms. Scully reported that as new applications are received she will forward them to Member Sturgeon so that she can welcome new members. K. Ryan Sheehy— Resource Guide Member Ryan Sheehy discussed the possibility of asking a member of the Youth Committee to design the cover of the Youth Resource Guide. After a brief discussion, it was decided to ask someone who members are familiar with from school to design the guide cover. The Committee decided on the 5"x8" size for the guide. Member Sheehy informed the Committee that City staff would be inputting the information and that an 3 PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE SEPTEMBER 6, 2008, APPROVED MINUTES expanded sub-committee of himself, Member Rohrbaugh, Chair Wohlmuth, and Co-chair Jenna Scott would be developing the actual content. L. Alahna Dunbar— School Beautification Project Member Alahna Dunbar stated that since Palm Desert High School is undergoing renovation perhaps other schools, i.e., the Middle School should be contacted to see what type of beautification project could be under taken there. She will meet with Ms. Scully at the conclusion of this meeting to get further direction. M. Katie Pawelczyk— Rotary Youth Committee Service Project Member Katie Pawelczyk requested a volunteer to serve as co-chair of this sub-committee. Member Carl Gerhardt volunteered to serve in that capacity. The date established for this project is April 24, 2009, which is in conjunction with the National League of Cities Youth Community Service Day and Rotary International Community Service Day. Participation will result in publicity for the Youth Committee with both of these organizations. N. Pat Scully— Desert Garden Henderson Building Opening Ms. Scully said this activity was covered under Member Armstrong's report. VII. OLD BUSINESS None VIII. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS A. CITY COUNCIL ISSUES Ms. Scully reminded the Committee that with regard to upcoming elections, any political advertising for specific candidates is forbidden on City property. IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. COMMITTEE MEMBERS None 4 PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE SEPTEMBER 6, 2008, APPROVED MINUTES B. STAFF 1. Introduction of new members Ms. Scully welcomed new members and reminded all members that their participation in community activities and consistent attendance at meetings is required. City Ordinance allows for two absences per year and a third absence constitutes an automatic resignation. Ms. Scully passed around the sheet to order shirts and advised the Committee that they would be ordered next week. Ms. Scully reminded the Committee that letters of recommendation and references need to be received early and by the Committee member. She will not accept those requests from parents of Members. 2. Attendance/Participation See above. X. ADJOURNMENT Upon a motion by Member Armstrong and second by Member Dunbar, the meeting was adjourned at 12:45 p.m. Motion carried by unanimous vote.
