HomeMy WebLinkAboutPrsntn - Fire Prevention WeekWhereas, the City of Palm Desert is committed to ensuring the safety
and security of all those living in and visiting our city. Fire is a serious
public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the
locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and
Whereas, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has
documented through its research a significant increase in injuries
and/or death from fires at home, even as home fires have steadily
declined; and
Whereas, Palm Desert's first responders are dedicated to reducing
the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through
prevention and protection education. Palm Desert's residents are
responsive to public education measures and are able to take
personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and
Whereas, the 2008 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Prevent Home
Fires," will have fire safety advocates spreading the word to our
community that, with a little extra caution, preventing the leading
cause of home fires —cooking, heating, electrical and smoking
materials —is within their power; and
Whereas, knowledge of how to prevent home fires will have a
positive effect on the home fire problem and is an opportunity to
prevent painful injury and/or death.
Now, Therefore, 1, Jean M. Benson, Mayor of the City of Palm
Desert, California, Do Hereby Proclaim October 5-11, 2008, as
