HomeMy WebLinkAboutPrsntn - Fire Prevention WeekWhereas, the City of Palm Desert is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in and visiting our city. Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and Whereas, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has documented through its research a significant increase in injuries and/or death from fires at home, even as home fires have steadily declined; and Whereas, Palm Desert's first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education. Palm Desert's residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and Whereas, the 2008 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Prevent Home Fires," will have fire safety advocates spreading the word to our community that, with a little extra caution, preventing the leading cause of home fires —cooking, heating, electrical and smoking materials —is within their power; and Whereas, knowledge of how to prevent home fires will have a positive effect on the home fire problem and is an opportunity to prevent painful injury and/or death. Now, Therefore, 1, Jean M. Benson, Mayor of the City of Palm Desert, California, Do Hereby Proclaim October 5-11, 2008, as FIRE PREVENTION WEEK and I urge residents to heed the important safety messages of Fire Prevention 2008 and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of Palm Desert's fire and emergency services.
