STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: APPROVE INDUSTRIAL SHOE COMPANY, SANTA ANA, CA, TO
PROVIDE SAFETY FOOTWEAR FOR EMPLOYEES
SUBMITTED BY: Gary Rosenblum, Risk Manager
DATE: December 10, 2009
Recommendation
By Minute Motion, approve Industrial Shoe Company located
in Santa Ana, CA, to provide safety footwear for employees.
Background
Industrial Shoe Company in Santa Ana, CA, has been providing safety boots to employees
utilizing a "shoe truck" to the City on a regular basis for two years. Because there is no
contractual commitment to the vendor, staff seeks approval for the company to continue its
service as a vendor to the City.
The "shoe truck" is a semi -trailer that acts as a transportable shoe store containing many
brands and styles of industrial safety boots. The vendor also provides expert shoe fitters
who work with the employees to ensure they get the right shoes for the job and that they fit
properly.
Certain city employees are required to wear safety boots for their job. They participate in
the City Safety Footwear Program, which is part of the City's Injury and Illness Prevention
Plan. This plan is required by Cal -OSHA and requires a hazard assessment of the job
tasks. Based on the hazards, certain safety features are required for the safety footwear
the employee wears while on duty.
The current system of using the Industrial Shoe Company business hours has been
operating smoothly and efficiently. The employees have a very wide selection of high
quality boots to choose from. It is also more efficient for the employees to have the shoe
store come to them while they are at work, rather than having to spend shopping for
required work boots. The vendor also has online shoe ordering, so if an employee needs
safety boots between "shoe truck" visits, the boots can be ordered online with minimum
effort.
Therefore, staff recommends continuing to utilize the services of Industrial Shoe.
