Approve the purchase of a surplus medic unit from the City of Indian Wells to serve as a reserve medic unit for the City of Palm Desert. 2. Appropriate $8,000 from Fire Fund Account No. 230-4220-433-4030, for purchase of a reserve medic unit to serve the City of Palm Desert. Commission Recommendation The Public Safety Commission will review this item at their December 9, 2009, meeting. Staff can provide a verbal report of the Commission's action upon request. Backaround As part of the FY 09-10 budget process, the City Council approved the inclusion of an additional medic unit at Indian Wells Fire Station No. 55, to respond to increased medical related service calls from the City's eastern boundaries. The City recently entered into a lease agreement with Indian Wells to operate a medic unit at Station No. 55. When full-time medic units require maintenance or are indisposed on high volume call runs, a reserve unit is called into service to alleviate this demand. With the new medic crew at Station No. 55, Palm Desert will operate a total of four medic units. The Fire Department informed staff that Palm Desert's single reserve medic unit is inadequate to meet this increased demand. The Fire Department further indicated that the ideal ratio of active to reserve medic units is two to one (2:1) and they would not go higher than the City's current three to one (3:1) ratio. Please note that the City of Indian Wells and Rancho Mirage also maintain a ratio of one active to one reserve unit (1:1). Staff Report Reserve Ambulance Purchase December 10, 2009 Page 2 of 2 There is an opportunity to purchase a surplus medic unit from the City of Indian Wells that is in turn-key condition and requires no foreseeable maintenance to make operational. This vehicle is a 1998 Ford E-Series Type I Ambulance and has approximately 58,487 miles. Indian Wells staff indicated that when they were initially seeking to sell this unit, estimates from various brokers and fleet professionals placed its value at $10,000. Upon further negotiations with staff, Indian Wells was amenable to lowering the uniYs price to $8,000. Staff recommends purchase of this unit to ensure having an adequate medic unit reserve capacity within Palm Desert. Fiscal Analysis If the City Council concurs with staff's recommendation, there would be an $8,000 appropriation from the Fire Fund to purchase this reserve medic unit. I could pay you that much with the rest of my expenses I would have more in the truck then what I could sell it for.
