Mary From: Desertbev418@aol.com [mailto:Desertbev418@aol.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 25, 2009 9:40 AM To: Gates, Mary Subject: E-Mail for Palm Desert Mayor Spiegl and City Council Members understand that you are voting for another year of The Art of Food & Wine on Thursday, February 26, 2009. The City has lost money for the last three years. It's time to say NO MORE. It's a waste of tax dollars that can be better spent on hiring additional police, fixing roads, doing more for our young people in the valley. The economy is such that we can no longer lose money, that can be better spent in other areas. I addressed the Council last year and asked that you NOT vote in favor for The Art of Food & Wine 2008, which fell on deaf ears. This year (2009) is worse than last year. We've tried this project for 3 years, it's time to move on. Have you ever published the losses for 2008, perhaps that would be a rude awakening for the people of Palm Desert. have lived in Palm Desert for 25 years, a full time resident. I also do not agree the additional $50,000 spend for Fashion Week on El Paseo. Now we've donated $150,000. The merchants on El Paseo do not want it either. Take a survey sometime. The projected losses of between $46,000 and $96,000 for this event I say ENOUGH. When you're in a recession, you don't give money to losing programs. It's time to say "We can't afford it". CALIFORNIA CUISINE February 1 9, 200+ Robert A. 5piegel, Mayor City of Palm Desert 755 1 O Fred Waring Drive Palm Desert, CA 9226o Dear Mayor Spiegel: Please consider my support for this year's proposed Art of Food and Wine Festival While I have always supported the event conceptually, it was not until this year that I was convinced the event is headed in the proper direction. It is my understanding that 2009's proposed event has a streamlined budget, yet still maintains the primary elements of interest to attendees. I view this as a crucial step towards a self sustaining event and would hope to see this path supported. Last year's two day participation cost the Cork Tree over $2000, and I'm sure each food exhibitor incurred similar costs, but it is an expense I will continue to support, given the coordination and progressive attendance of this year's Festival. Palm Desert's Art of Food and Wine Festival has momentum. While attendance is rightfully a concern in this environment, I believe the long term benefits of a consistent effort will outweigh any lean years. Most importantly, I believe 2008 was but a glimpse of our Festival's potential. jincerely, Raymond Rodriguez Casuelas Cafe Cork Tree 7495o Country?
