CALL TO ORDER Chairwoman Kermode called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m. 11. ROLL CALL Members Present: Member Absent: Joan Beasley Lawrence Guzzetta, Vice-Chairman Betty Carapellese Marilyn Hahn Louise Kermode, Chairman Ella Manor Bobbie Rosenberg Staff Present: Jean Benson, Councilmember Rachelle Klassen, Staff Liaison Lori Wimbish, Recording Secretary 111. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS JEANNIE KAYS reported that the Library placed 4th out of 18 world competitors at the Drill Team Competition. IV. CONSENT CALENDAR A. MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF JUNE 25, 2008 Joan Beasley moved to, by Minute Motion, approve the minutes of the June 25, 2008, meeting. Motion was seconded by Bobbie Rosenberg and carried 6-0. V. APPROVED MINUTES PALM DESERT LIBRARY PROMOTION COMMITTEE OCTOBER 22, 2008 VII. OLD BUSINESS A. Update on budgeted projects Rachelle Klassen gave an update on the budget and library activities. The City's audio visual consultant was at the Library completing final measurements and taking pictures of the Community Room. The consultant will make a recommendation as to what would be needed to hard wire the sound system and the possibility of installing big screen television monitors. With Committee concurrence the report was received and filed. VIII. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. Council Member Jean Benson Mayor Benson reported that the City would probably not be getting additional Library space from College of the Desert. She suggested that it may be more feasible to open a Library in another location rather than enlarging the existing Library. B. Librarian's Report(Jeannie Kays) Ms. Kays spoke about November events at the Library. She said the monthly calendar of events was very popular and patrons continually ask for it before it is printed. The Library's new Young Adult Associate started in February. Ms. Kays was very pleased with her programs and young adult attendance has increased. The Library will host its annual Halloween party on Wednesday, October 29. There were 640 children and 157 teens enrolled in the Library's Summer Reading program. The total number of patrons who attended the Library's summer programs was 2,326. Ms. Kays reported that she ordered bookcases for the Library to use for display areas. She reported that the Cathedral City Library has a temporary location. The Library is expected to reopen in January 2009. A discussion was held regarding the Indio Library. Ms. Kays announced that the Chefs at the Library Cookbook Celebration is planned for Friday, October 24, 2008, from 5:30 — 7 p.m. There will be APPROVED MINUTES PALM DESERT LIBRARY PROMOTION COMMITTEE OCTOBER 22, 2008 music; and refreshments provided by Trader Joes. Nine chefs will be attending the event, as well as Jan from Kitchen Kitchen. Ms. Kays reported that the Library's computer system will be down for two days due to upgrading. Upon question by Ella Manor, Ms. Kays responded that installation of fiber optics for the computers could take 30 to 60 days. She stated that they might be looking into alternative funding to help out with the cost, i.e., grant funding. C. Event and Volunteer Coordinator's Report (Mary Arnold) None D. Budget Review Group (Ella Manor/Betty Carapellese, Lawrence Guzzetta) None E. Friends of the Palm Desert Library (Joan Beasley) Joan Beasley distributed updated financial information. She gave an overview of how the book room was doing, as well as internet book sales. Ms. Beasley reported that she attended the CFLAC meeting. Representatives from each Library and LSSI staff members were also in attendance. She gave a brief report on the issues discussed at the meeting. The Committee meets quarterly at different Libraries throughout the county. It's a good opportunity to learn about what is happening at other Libraries. To learn about the problems other facilities were facing, new ideas, and an opportunity for everyone to share tips they have for getting donations. She felt it was a very useful committee and she was happy to take over for Ella Manor. Ms. Beasley distributed brochures that list books that are age appropriate. F.
