ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE NOVEMBER 3, 2008, APPROVED MINUTES IV. CONSENT CALENDAR A. APPROVAL OF THE OCTOBER 6, 2008, MEETING MINUTES Upon a motion by Member Alahna Dunbar and second by Member Carl Gerhardt minutes of the October 6, 2008, meeting was approved as presented. Motion carried by unanimous vote. V. NEW BUSINESS None VI. CONTINUED BUSINESS SUBCOMMITTEE UPDATES A. Bryce Griffith — Community Wreath Lighting Ceremony Member Bryce Griffith announced that the Committee will be chairing three activities at the Palm Desert Community Wreath Lighting Ceremony scheduled to be held from 5 — 7 p.m. on Friday, December 5. Volunteers are needed to assist with the cookie decorating activity and the temporary holiday tattoos. Bowls for water and paper towels, for adhering temporary tattoos, will be needed that evening. The third activity will be a snowflake toss and volunteers will be needed for that activity as well. He passed around a sign-up sheet and will present final assignments at the December 1 Committee meeting. B. Antonia Gutierrez— Community Youth Gathering No report. C. Elle Wohlmuth — Safe House of the Desert No report. D. Kate Hart— Community Display Member Kate Hart reminded Ms. Scully that she and co-chair Jenna Scott still need to meet with Public Art Coordinator Deborah Schwartz to begin discussion about the arrangement of the display at the Visitor Center. E. Jonny Rohrbaugh —Activity w/ Senior Center Member Jonny Rohrbaugh reminded Ms. Scully that he needs to meet with Peter Rittenhouse regarding the activity for the Senior Center. Ms. Scully advised that she would take care of scheduling that meeting in the next month. 2 PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE NOVEMBER 3, 2008, APPROVED MINUTES F. Raine Armstrong — City Sponsored Events, Activities, and Programs 1. November 11, 2008, Veteran's Day Celebration Member Raine Armstrong polled the Committee to ascertain who would assist on Veteran's Day. The following members committed to serving as hosts/hostesses for the Veteran's Day Celebration scheduled to be held on Tuesday, November 11 at 11 a.m. at Freedom Park on Country Club Drive: Chair Wohlmuth, Members Ryan Sheehy, Dunbar, Katie Pawelczyk, Ally McCollister, and Alternates, Laura Baldwin and Sydney Werry will assist. Ms. Scully advised that she would be out of town and Palm Desert Management Analyst David Hermann would be the on-site coordinator. Member Armstrong will coordinate the Committee's activities that day. Upon arrival, Committee members should report to Member Armstrong. G. Alison McCollister— Middle School Mentoring Program 1. Middle School Christmas Party Member Kate Hart reported that since the After School Program does not have an evacuation plan the project decided upon this year is to develop a mock school made out of discarded appliance boxes and to develop an evacuation plan to be presented to the Palm Desert City Council in May 2009. The Middle School Group's assignment was to contact stores to locate such materials. Ms. Scully added that the next meeting at the Middle School was scheduled for November 14; however, she was informed that November 14 was a minimum day. Therefore, the Mentoring Program meeting will be cancelled. Chair Wohlmuth requested that the Youth Committee prepare a holiday program for this group and offered to serve as chair to organize the attendant activities. H. Abby Sturgeon — New Member Mentoring Member Abby Sturgeon introduced and welcomed Jordan White and Natalie Grum to the Committee. I. Ryan Sheehy— Resource Guide Member Sheehy reported that the sub-committee has been meeting and begun to focus its efforts in this regard. The guide should be ready to be given to City staff no later than the first of February 2009. 3 PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE NOVEMBER 3, 2008, APPROVED MINUTES J. Alahna Dunbar— School Beautification Project Member Dunbar advised that she had been researching this project and the Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church Pre-school has expressed interest in participating. She has a meeting scheduled for November 4 at 3:30 p.m. at the school to discuss the details. K. Katie Pawelczyk— Rotary Youth Committee Service Project Member Pawelczyk reminded Ms. Scully that she needs to meet with Peter Rittenhouse and Palm to Pines Rotary President Jim Brock to get this project focused. Ms. Scully will schedule this meeting for sometime in December or early January 2009. L. Pat Scully— Lincoln School Elementary Holiday Party Ms. Scully reported that the Lincoln Elementary School After School Program has scheduled a Holiday party for December 19 and requested that the Committee host some activities. The party will take place from 4 — 5 p.m. with parents of After School participants arriving around 5 p.m. for an additional program. Ms. Scully will serve as Ms. Claus and Community member John Marman will serve as Santa Claus. Committee members should come dressed as elves. Members Sturgeon and Armstrong offered to chair this activity. VII. OLD BUSINESS None VIII. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS A. CITY COUNCIL ISSUES None IX. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. COMMITTEE MEMBERS Chair Wohlmuth requested that the Committee's participation in the Golf Cart Parade be agendized for a future meeting. Chair Wohlmuth requested that a joint meeting between the Youth Committee and City Council be scheduled for early 2009. B. STAFF Ms. Scully reminded the Committee that she will be on the East Coast from November 6-16, 2008, but can be reached by either leaving a message on her office phone, cell phone, or by email. 4 PALM DESERT YOUTH COMMITTEE NOVEMBER 3, 2008, APPROVED MINUTES Ms. Scully reported that only one Committee member responded to her request to indicate interest in being reappointed and polled the Committee to ascertain interest. Ms. Scully reported that the breakfast to thank the Meals on Wheels drivers and to present a check to the Senior Center for almost $7,000 was held on October 31, and attended by Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack. The event was very nicely attended and some wonderful photos were taken. X.
