Recommendation:
Receive and file informational report requesting the acceptance of West Coast
Arborists' donation to the Public Works Department.
Discussion:
There is a movement in the field of Urban Forestry to recycle urban trees in ways other
than for mulch. West Coast Arborists, Inc., (WCA) is a leader in this movement in the
Southern California area. Annually, WCA harvests different species of trees from
various municipalities. The harvested trees are transported to one of their wood yards
where they are milled into lumber and recycled into furniture. The furniture is then
donated to various agencies and organizations during the holiday season.
In 2008, West Coast Arborists, Inc. was awarded the City of Palm Desert's Tree Pruning
Project and in December, they donated such piece of furniture to the City. The furniture
is a two -person bench, which was placed in the hallway next to the Code Compliance
Service Counter in the Development Services Building. The bench is used on a regular
basis by persons conducting business with the Code Compliance Department
Therefore, staff requests that City Council accept West Coast Arborists' dons ioi to
Public Works Department.
