STAFF REPORT
By Minute Motion, authorize the purchase of the publication,
Images of America - Palm Desert, and the profit sharing of the
proceeds with the Historical Society of Palm Desert.
DATE: January 22, 2009
Recommendation:
By Minute Motion, authorize the purchase of the publication, Images of America —
Paim Desert, and the profit sharing of the proceeds with the Historical Society of
Palm Desert.
Background:
The Historical Society of Palm Desert has recently completed the writing and publication
of Images of America - Palm Desert, a book that chronicles the history of Palm Desert in
vintage black and white photographs. The publication brings to life the people, places,
and events that define the community through a collection of historical photographs and
stories as compiled by Historical Society members.
The Historical Society developed this idea to not only share their collection of stories
and photographs, but to also create a fundraising tool. Because their facility doesn't
typically act as a retail outlet they have requested the Visitor Center join as a partner
and serve as the main source for distribution of the publication. The books will
eventually be available at larger retail outlets as well.
This being a publication that the Visitor Center would typically carry, staff believes it
would be a natural fit and easily accomplished to partner with the Historical Society.
The publicity associated with the release of this book and the subsequent sales will
serve as a resource to increase traffic to and visibility of the Visitor Center. Additionally,
staff will work with the Historical Society to host a Book Release event at the Visitor
Center in February.

Staff recommends the specifics of the arrangement between the Palm Desert Visitor
Center and the Historical Society of Palm Desert work as follows:
1) Visitor Center to purchase quantity of books to meet the initial sales needs
(approximately 400 books at $11.00 each).
2) Funds are available in the Visitor Center Cost of Goods Sold account, 110-4419-
453-8012, which is the account used to purchase merchandise for resale.
3) Visitor Center would sell the book at $21.99 plus tax.
4) Visitor Center to recoup its initial investment of $11.00 per book, retain the sales
tax amount ($1.70/book), and receive a $1.00 per book profit for each book sold.
The remaining profit ($10.00/book) to be assigned to the Historical Society.
