Palm Desert City Council,
This.will confirm that our son, Phillip Andelson, a 2007 graduate of Palm Desert
igh School, received a $500 cash scho(arship from Alan Woodruff of the Desert
Cities Track Club. Alan has been a great coach and has been very encouraging to
our running youth in the Coachella Valley. Our son Phillip took much of what he
learned from Alan and is now a junior at UC Berkeley, majoring in mechanical
engineering.
We have attended many of Alan's "Turkey Trot" races on EI Paseo, of which the
race proceeds help fund the Palm Desert High School running scholarship program,
which provides two cash scholarships each year.
We have known Alan for 15 years and fully support him and his events. The
events are well planned and well run. It was a great disappointment last year when
t6e "Turkey Trot" was moved to Rancho Mirage. Our hope, along with many
others, is that the "Turkey Trot" will be moved back to EI Paseo in Palm Desert as
it is a great family event.
Sincerely, _

RE: 2009 Turkey Trot on EI Paseo
Dear Ms. Steele and Mr. Barnard,
I am writing on behalf of the Desert Cities Track Club and the annual event they hosted in past years
on El_I'aseo—the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day. I write this letter of support from both a
personal AND community perspective with the hope that the Commission and the City Council
continue to have this event in the city of Palm Desert and on El Paseo.
• My son was the proud recipient of a Desert Cities Track scholarship that was funded from this
event three years ago. He was first encouraged to run by Palm Desert Middle School—Coach
Dave Murphy—and then conrinued on at PDHS where he spent four productive years running and
holding leadership positions as cross-country team captain and track captain...he also holdsthree
track recards at the school. Although he received several college scholarships, this one from
Desert Cities Track Club meant as much or more than the others because it honored all his hard
years oFrunning under Coach Alan Woodruff's tutelage and years spent as a leader for his
teammates. Unlike the more popular sports like football and basebail, track sports are not always
at the top of the list for school recognition even though it often requires more personal drive and
determination to run in the 100'+weather in the desert. To my lrnowledge, this organization is the
only one that gives recognition to runners; the money raised from the enormously successful
Turkey Trot is cmcial to offering the Desert Cities Track Club scholarships at the high school.
• I have personally worked at this event checking runners in and iYs quite amazing to see the
holiday dads-sons-moms-daughters and friends all lined up ready to run down beauriful El Paseo.
My husband has a stack of t-shirts from the Turkey Trot that he wears all year long, in effect
advertising our community. As well, the event is advertised in Runner's World magazine and
many other venues -iYs an invaluable piece of advertising for beautiful Palm Desert and gives
our many holiday visitors something to look forward to when they arrive for Thanksgiving.
Thank you for your serious consideration in retaining and promoring the Turkey Trot race this year to
continue the tradition of track scholarships for our hard-running teens!
Sincerely yours,

Dear Coach Woodruff, 9/10/09
As you know, Geoff started his freshman year at Palm Deserf High School smalier
than his peers and very aware of it. He had friends playing various sports and he
wanted to find what worked for him. Forfunately he found you and the cross
country team at PDHS! Geoff realized that cross country wasn't about size, but
speed and you were there to remind him of that all along the way!
So, you were there to witness the transformation of my "undersized" son running
5-b miles every morning at 5:30, and you were there to encourage him at the
races to really kick it in and turn on the speed! And the speed did kick in and so
did his growingi He ran all four years on the cross country team and gained a
varsity letter, confidence, speed, and height! He finished his senior year as
captain of the team, had his personal best of 17:19, and was eligibie for CIF
after that race. He graduated from high school a confident young man, and I
believe I owe so much of that to his cross country career at PDHS. He is no
longer a small, unsure high school freshman; he is now a sophomore at University
of Arizona and is over six feet tall!!
I am so proud of all that Geoff has accompiished so far in his life, but at the
PDHS Scholarship Awards Night in June of 2008, I was cheering so loud for my
son as he received a scholarship from the Deserf Cities Running Club! You were
there to present it to him and you also mentioned the growth that he made
while under your coaching during his four years at PDHS.
I know his physical growth is what you discussed while giving him his award, but I
know it was so much more! The growth Geoff made from within has meant so
much to both my husband and me. Geoff never expected any kind of school
scholarship because he knew he didn't have the GPA numbers of his friends.
However, he always had his running- thanks to you! And the scholarship from the
Deserf Cities Running Club helped him sfand that much taller as he was on that
stage with his peers receiving recognition for a job well done!
I am so grateful to you and your organization for giving my son the chance to
receive a scholarship for all of his years of running. I am also grateful for your
wisdom, encouragement, and spporf of Geoff throughout his four years under
your coaching! Now that my son is an adult, I am thrilled he now considers you a
friend, and he continues to keep iri contact with you while he pursues other
interests in college.
Thank you for everythingi
