HomeMy WebLinkAboutDonation of Holiday Decorations to the Living Desert CITY OF PALM DESERT CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE STAFF REPORT REQUEST: APPROVE STAFF'S RECOMMENDATION TO DONATE THE CITY'S PREVIOUS INVENTORY OF HOLIDAY DECORATIONS TO THE LIVING DESERT SUBMITTED BY: Stephen Y. Aryan, Assistant to the City Manager DATE: October 8, 2009 CONTENTS: 1) Photographs of Holiday Decorations Recommended for ponation 2) Miscellaneous Correspondence Recommendations By Minute Motion, approve staff's recommendation to donate the City's previous inventory of holiday decorations to The Living Desert. Backqround In 2008, the City Council recommended the purchase of new Holiday Decorations to replace the existing inventory that was approximately twelve years old. Please note that the City refurbished some newer decor to LED lights, specifically at the Visitor Center, and these particular items remain within the current Holiday Program. The Council also directed the City's existing inventory of Holiday Decorations, which will not be refurbished, as surplus and directed the City Manager to recommend a list of possible recipients. The following is the Holiday Decoration Inventory that is available for donation: AMOUNT ITEM Eleven Pole Mountable Bells Four Five Feet Round Wreaths Four 114 Wreaths (connects to make 2 Full Wreaths) Twenty-Two Five Feet 1/4 Wreaths (connects to make 11 Full Wreaths) Twenty-Two Three Foot Round Wreaths Seven Christmas Trees Five Bundles of Gold Foil Garland Six Bundles of Red Foil Garland One 800 Feet of Green Garland with Lights Staff sent correspondence to the Desert Sands Unified School District (DSUSD), College of the Desert (COD), and The Living Desert, in an attempt to ascertain their Holiday Decorations Donation October 8, 2009 Page 2 of 2 interest in receiving these items. These organizations were chosen based on the fact that they would have the resources and suitable locations to properly showcase such large commercial quality decor. These items are not typical residential grade holiday decorations as they require a considerable storage space and labor force to install and properly care for. Of these three organizations, The Living Desert, an incorporated non-profit organization dedicated to education and conservation of the desert ecosystem, was the only one to indicate an interest. COD and DSUSD sent correspondence indicating they were not interested in the decor. If these items are not donated, the City will likely have to pay a hauler to remove these items, which will also not be diverted from the waste stream. Therefore, staff respectfully recommends donating the City's previous holiday decoration inventory, as specified in this report, to The Living Desert.
