PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: Authorization to Advertise for Bids for a 2010 Toyota Prius
Replacement Vehicle
SUBMITTED BY: Mark Greenwood, P.E., Director of Public Works
DATE: September 10, 2009
CONTENTS: Hybrid Research
RECOMMENDATION:
By Minute Motion, authorize staff to advertise for bids for purchase of a 2010
Toyota Prius hybrid replacement vehicle.
BACKGROUND:
On April 24, 2009 vehicle number 94 (Hybrid Honda Civic Sedan) was involved in a
collision. The insurance company determined the vehicle to be a total loss, reimbursing
the City $20,698.00. This money was placed in fund 530, "Vehicle Replacement Fund."
DISCUSSION:
The City fleet had four Honda Civic Hybrid sedans. These hybrid vehicles are used by
staff for transportation to local meetings as well as meetings outside the Coachella
Valley. Staff would like to replace the lost hybrid vehicle, with a 2010 Hybrid Toyota
Prius. The Prius has the most efficient fuel economy of all the hybrids, at 51 miles per
gallon (mpg) in the city and 48 mpg on the highway.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Staff believes the insurance reimbursement of $20, 698.00 will offset the cost of the new
vehicle by as much as two thirds. The remaining one third of the cost will be funded
from the vehicle replacement fund account.
