APPROVE a recommendation to accept United States Department of Justice BJA FY 2009 Recovery Act Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program Local Solicitation (Award #2009-SB-B9-0954) in the amount of$64,344. 2. APPROVE ratification of the City Manager's execution of any prior or future grant documents associated with the United States Department of Justice BJA FY 2009 Recovery Act Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program Local Solicitation (Award #2009-SB-69-0954). BACKGROUND In June 2009, the Palm Desert Police Department appfied for $64,344 in grant funds provided in the Recovery Act: Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Formula Program: Local Solicitation. On July 10, 2009, the City of Palm Desert was awarded the grant funds. These grant funds will be used in multiple areas, as fotlows: 1. Purchase one (1) Automated License Plate Reader ALPR 2. Fund a citywide Theft Suppression Program � � $21,600.00 3. Fund a citywide VICE Crimes Su $�7,744.00 4. The grant amount is $6�,344.00. Funds will be used for multiple law enforcement programs. This award program runs from March 1, 2009, through February 28, 2013. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In June 2009 the Palm Desert Police Department applied for $64,344 in grant funds provided in the Recovery Act: Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Formula Program: Local Solicitation. The city of Palm DeseR will use their Recovery Act JAG award for officer overtime,law enforcement equipment,and child safety equipment. Specifically,the JAG funds wil]be used for police officer overtime for the Theft Suppression Program and the Vice Crime Suppression Program, the purchase of an Automated License Plate Recognidon(ALPR) bl�m n1t�a�cts�an b it p ograms�to comba�t thefta d assoc ated crimes pIThe� will be aimed at conducang high visibility patrol and conducting p Vice Crime Suppression Progracn will be simed at conducting surveillance and undercover operations targeting massage establishments believed to be conducting illegal prostitution activities. The ALPR system will allow officers to rapidly scan vehicle plates associated with auto theft,felony warrants,pari�ing viola�ions,along witn a multitude of other crimes,while performing nomrnal police patrol. Bicycle helmeu and child safety seats witl be purchased and distributed to the residents of Palm Desert in order to increase the awareness of child safety,improve police community relations,and increase the probability of saving lives.
