CALL TO ORDER Michael Shimer called the meeting to order at 2:00 p.m. II. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS None. IV. CONSENT CALENDAR A. MINUTES OF THE MEETINGS OF JANUARY 26, 2010. C cz C Q ABSTAIN: Stephanie Loog moved, by Minute Motion, to approve the minutes of the January 26, 2010, meeting as presented. Motion was seconded by Marlane Wolf and carried 5-0. APPROVED MINUTES PALM DESERT MARKETING COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 16, 2010 V. NEW BUSINESS A. PALM SPRINGS HOTEL WEEK EVENT Omar Haddedou and Karine Garnes from HotelWeeks.com made a presentation for Palm Springs Hotel Week Event, which is planned for May 14-28, 2010. Three sponsorship options were proposed. After questioning, Mr. Haddedou reported that they are in the beginning stage of requesting sponsor cities, hotels, restaurants and attractions. No properties or organizations have yet committed to the event. Theresa Maggio moved, by Minute Motion, to continue the sponsorship request to the next meeting. Motion was seconded by Kimberly Bowers and carried 5-0. B. PALM SPRINGS DESERT RESORTS RESTAURANT WEEK Kim Crandal from the Board of Palm Springs Desert Resorts Restaurant Week gave a short history of Restaurant Week and answered questions. The June 4- 13, 2010 event will be the third year for the promotion. The requested sponsorship will be used to boost the drive market advertising. In addition to participating restaurants, the event website lists participating hotels and provides links to each city's attractions. The Desert Springs Marriott and thirteen Palm Desert restaurants have already joined. Ms. Maggio moved, by Minute Motion, to sponsor Restaurant Week in the amount of $2,500. Motion was seconded by Ms. Loog and carried 5-0. C. REQUEST FOR INPUT REGARDING THE PROPOSED FISCAL YEAR 2010-2011 MARKETING BUDGET Kristy Kneiding mentioned that because of this timely agenda item, the airport presentation will be moved to the next month. Ms. Kneiding passed out a summary guide of the marketing objectives, target audiences, key markets, advertising, promotions, cooperative advertising partnerships, collateral development, and local marketing efforts. In light of next year's anticipated budget reduction, Justin McCarthy asked for prioritized areas that should be protected. Regarding cutting expenses, the suggestion was made to produce the BrightSide newsletter every other month and to direct the readers to websites instead of printing all the information for an event or story. 2 APPROVED MINUTES PALM DESERT MARKETING COMMITTEE FEBRUARY 16, 2010 The suggestion was also made that the Palm Desert yearly calendar be available for pickup by residents at the Visitor Center instead of mailing. After discussion, the Committee identified marketing priorities for the following areas: online, testing radio opportunities, targeted PR, possible special events, co-op opportunities, a reduction in print ads, and put TV ads on hold. Ms. Wolf made a motion to recommend to Council that six instead of ten issues of the BrightSide be produced, and the next Palm Desert yearly calendar be made available for pick up instead of mailing. Motion was seconded by Kimberly Bowers and carried 5- 0. VI. INFORMATIONAL ITEMS None. VII. REPORTS AND REMARKS Bruce Nation reported that he had attended the Seattle Golf Show, where he found that Desert Willow and Palm Desert were well known. The Pete Carlson tent sale went well. Mr. Nation offered to show the Palm Desert video when he goes to a golf show. Ms. Kneiding explained that the POW WOW is the travel industry association's national convention and trade show, and if there are funds available, Palm Desert could co-op with the CVA to attend. VIII. REPORTS FROM CITY COUNCIL LIAISONS Mr. Spiegel reported that the Westin Desert Willow Villas timeshares had a silent opening and sold 60% of the first five buildings. When 80% are sold they will start construction on more. Beginning in March the Palm Desert Chamber will have "Restaurant Fridays" to support local member restaurants during the lunch hour. IX.
