HomeMy WebLinkAboutPrsntatn - Multiple Sclerosis Awareness WeekWhereas, multiple sclerosis (MS) interrupts the flow of information between the brain and the body and stops people from moving. It is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, and every hour in the United States someone is newly diagnosed; and Whereas, the Southern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society reports that approximately 400 people in the Coachella Valley and surrounding areas are living with this disease, which generally strikes young adults between the ages of 20 and 50, attacking them in the prime of their lives, and affects more than 400,000 people nationwide; and Whereas, symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS; and Whereas, the Southern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has been committed throughout the years to mobilize the voices of people statewide who want to do something about MS now. This dedicated Chapter is currently planning several major local fundraisers and educational programs to raise MS awareness; and Whereas, Walk MS events are scheduled this April in locations throughout Southern Califomia, with The Desert Cities Walk to be held at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park on April 17, 2010. Now, Therefore, I, Cindy Finerty, Mayor of the City of Palm Desert, California, Do Hereby Proclaim March 8-14, 2010, as Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week in the City of Palm Desert in appreciation of and admiration for the major work that the Southern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society has done over the years to heighten MS awareness.
