APPROVED MINUTES PALM DESERT LIBRARY PROMOTION COMMITTEE JULY 15, 2009 VI. CONTINUED BUSINESS None VII. OLD BUSINESS None VIII. REPORTS AND REMARKS A. Council Member Jean Benson None B. Librarian's Report(Jeannie Kays) Jeannie Kays distributed Library statistics to the Committee. She reported that the Library continues to grow even with the reopening of the Cathedral City Library and the new library in La Quinta. Last evening the library held a Harry Potter party wherein 130 people were in attendance and finro television channels reported the event. She reported that there were 650 children and teens enrolled in the Summer Reading Program. She also reported that Walmart donated $1000 to the Friends of the Library. The donation was used to purchase prizes for the Summer Reading Program. The Bookmobile is back in business. Ninety-four people visited the Bookmobile in June. A discussion was held regarding the possibility of the Library getting a face lift during this fiscal year. C. Event and Volunteer Coordinator's Report (Mary Arnold) Mary Arnold stated that 90 Library volunteers worked 947 hours. Thirty teenagers volunteered 279 hours. We have kept them very busy. This has been the best year we have had with the teens. The Library has programs this summer for adults and children. Through The Friends of the Library we were able to schedule a series of 4 chef programs for the teens. Ms. Arnold distributed the Library schedule for July and August; along with brochure on the Young ArtisYs Summer Reading Club. APPROVED MINUTES PALM DESERT LIBRARY PROMOTION COMMITTEE JULY 15, 2009 Ms. Arnold described some of the programs and classes held at the Library. D. Budget Review Group (Ella Manor and Betty Carapellese) None E. Friends of the Palm Desert Library (Joan Beasley) Ms. Beasley distributed The Friends Report and the CFLAC Report. She reported that this was the middle of the fiscal budget year for The Friends she added up the numbers so the Committee could see that despite the economy they were still bringing in money from the bookstore. It is not quite as much as last year, however, it is still very good. The online book sales have dropped some and we have had to shut down a couple of times due to lack of volunteers, but it is starting to pick up again. The cookbook project will bring in around a $5,000 profit after its all said and done. Ms. Beasley gave a report on CFLAC. Its last meeting was April 16, at the Mecca Library. The next meeting will be held on July 16, in Idyllwild. This news is a little old; however, she did not believe that anything has changed. Nancy Johnson, County Librarian, delivers the main report at the meeting. She reported that there will be cuts in the 2009/10 budget, but they have decided that they can hold the line by not filling vacancies and they expect to maintain staff positions and library operations at the current level. They have made the commitment that those items were the top priority and that was the good news. They are planning to maintain the book budget for the coming year except of course the mitigation money dropped off with the decrease of construction. That money was used to buy a lot of books will not be available but they are keeping their same book and materials budget. The current renovations of building projects that have been started are going to be completed. At Sun City in the Riverside area they are completing a new library and they have plans to build one in Indio and they are moving forward with those plans. Ms. Johnson predicted that the following year's budget will be tough. Because the property evaluations have dropped, the revenues will be less, so they know that the year after this will be hard and there will likely be major changes in hours and staffing. The remainder of the meeting consists of reports from each representative from the branch libraries. What their programs are and if they have any pressing needs, or happening in their libraries. When the reports were completed we took a tour of the Mecca Library, which was very lovely. The children put together a tiled mural that tells the folklore tales of Mexico and it is told in English and in the native tongue of the Indian tribe present at that time. It is really wonderful and the kids really love that library and it is very, very nice. Miguel is the Librarian and he is superb. Tomorrow she will be traveling to Idyllwild and will report on APPROVED MINUTES PALM DESERT LIBRARY PROMOTION COMMITTEE JULY 15, 2009 everything said here today and taking pictures. They like to see our cookbook and chef demonstrations. Other libraries are starting their own chef projects. We share fundraising ideas and projects. F. Committee Chair(Louise Kermode) None G.
