Commission Recommendation On December 9, 2009, the Public Safety Commission recommended approval of the Palm Desert Police Department's request to purchase 1,050 Child Identification Fingerprint Kits utilizing Cal Cops funding. Backqround Over the years, the Palm Desert Police Department dispersed thousands of Child Identification Fingerprint Kits at numerous events, including child safety fairs, neighborhood watch programs, and Stranger Danger events. These kits enable parents to document vital information about their child should they ever go missing. The dissemination of these kits also presents officers the opportunity to reach out to the community and stress the importance of obtaining identifying information about their children. The kit includes information such as the child's height, weight, identifying marks, medical information and most importantly, their fingerprints, which are often not documented in any other form throughout their youth. Space is also provided within the kit for a hair sample, in order to capture the child's DNA. Request to Purchase Child Identification Fingerprint Kits. Lt. Shouse stated that the kits were very popular with the public and the Department receives multiple requests for them. Chair Nethery commented that it sounds as though this is a very good thing to provide to the citizenry. Commissioner Butzbach moved, by Minute Motion, to concur with the Police Department's request to purchase Child Identification Fingerprint Kits in the amount of $996. Motion was seconded by Commissioner Kirkwood and carried unanimously. 6
