HomeMy WebLinkAboutOut-of-State Trvl - CA Lnd Surveyors Assoc Conference CITY OF PALM DESERT PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT STAFF REPORT REQUEST: AUTHORIZE THE CITY SURVEYOR TO ATTEND THE CALIFORNIA LAND SURVEYORS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE IN RENO, NEVADA, FROM FEBRUARY 28 TO MARCH 3, 2010 SUBMITTED BY: Mark Greenwood, P.E., Director of Public Works DATE: January 28, 2010 CONTENTS: Domestic Per Diem Rates for Nevada Conference Registration Form Recommendation By Minute Motion, authorize the City Surveyor to attend the California Land Surveyors Association (CLSA) conference in Reno, Nevada, from February 28 to March 3, 2010. Funds are available in Account No. 110-4300-413-3120, Public Works Conference/Seminars/Workshops account. Backqround It is necessary for the City Surveyor to stay abreast of current laws and advances in technology that pertains to land surveying. The most efficient and cost effective way to achieve this continuing education is to attend the annual CLSA conference. At the conference, comprehensive training is offered on many aspects of the land surveying field, including land development and mapping. The alternative to attending this conference would be to attend several one- or two-day seminars in California, which would be piecemeal, random, and would almost certainly be more costly in the aggregate. The four-day conference fee for the 2010 CLSA conference is $365.00; with approximately $770.50 for travel-related expenses based on the U.S. General Services Administration Domestic Per Diem Rates for Reno, Nevada. The estimated total cost is $1,135.50. Staff Report Authorize Out-of-State Travel for City Surveyor January 28, 2010 Page 2 of 2 Fiscal Analvsis The benefits of authorizing this out-of-state travel for the City Surveyor outweigh the cost of providing the necessary continuing education in-state.
