Recommendation
By Minute Motion:
(1) Approve the City of Palm Desert contribution of $3,000 to the
Virginia Waring International Piano Competition Black and
White Ball on January 31 , 2010, for a table of ten;
(2) Appropriate funds from Account 110-4110-410-3125.
Backqround
Peggy Cravens, President of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition,
requested the City of Palm Desert consider purchasing a table of ten at the Black and
White Gala Ball on January 31, 2010. Palm Desert is the host city for the competition.
Several cities have purchased tables at the Gala Ball, including Rancho Mirage and
Indian Wells.
Attendees and their guests may be taxed on the attendance at the Gala Ball.
Palm Desert has historically supported the Virginia Waring International Piano
Competition.
The City of Palm Desert purchased an advertisement in the competition brochure for
$1,000.

Virginia Waring International Piano Competition - Fact Sheet
• Unique on the West Coast -- nothing like this -- "Piano Olympics" - contestants come
from atl over the world to compete in multiple categories: solo, concerto and master
classes. Adult division has a chamber music category. All Finals played with Full
Orchestra -- very rare for Chi ldren and Teen Divisions
• Main competition occurs every other year, alternating between Adults age 18-35 and
Children/Teens: Juniors (12 and under) plus Intermediates (age 13-17);
• Over 33 hours of live classical music performed FREE to the public over 8 days, plus
another 9 hours of low cost concerts ($10 - 35);
• Two venues: Indian Wells Theater (free parking) with Concerto Finals with Full
Orchestra at the McCallum Theatre
• Around 8,000 in attendance during 2009 Competition - double the previous 2007
competition; Outreach and Concerts at tocal venues reach another 3,000 people each
year
• Over $100,000 spent with local merchants, businesses, hotels and restaurants each
year, doubling in the Competition Year
• Trade advertising includes Europe, Asia and South America: 4 international and 4
national publications and websites -- all targeted towards music lovers - Palm Desert,
California mentioned in each ad, with major sponsors' togos
• Consumer Advertising includes local print, radio, and KUSC classical music radio
station, which reaches Santa Barbara, San Diego and Orange County -- people came
from as far away as Lithuania, British Columbia, Novia Scotia, and Rhode Island just to
attend this competition.
• 65% of audience was part or full time residents, 12% out of state, 13% out of area and
2% came from outside the US. Several newcomers asked to be on our mailing list so
they can plan their vacations around the next Competition dates.
• Started in 1978 on the campus of College of the Desert; Over 100 volunteers help
during the competition;
• Audience for Classical Music is very steady �t has shown less audience decline than
sporting events or large rock /jazz "event" per the LA Times
