CITY MANAGER'S OFFICE
STAFF REPORT
REQUEST: CONSIDERATION OF LEGISLATIVE REVIEW COMMITTEE ACTION
ON AB 1607 (KNIGHT) AT ITS MEETING OF FEBRUARY 23, 2010
DATE: March 11, 2010
CONTENTS: AB 1607 Language
Recommendation
By Minute Motion, concur with the action taken by the Legislative Review
Committee at its meeting of February 23, 2010, and direct staff to prepare a
letter of support for the Mayor's signature with regard to AB 1607 (Knight)
relative to public housing.
Background
Existing law provides that anyone who defrauds a housing program of a public housing
authority of more than $400 is guilty of grand theft.
This bill would provide, in addition, that any public housing authority may require that any
application or document filed with the public housing authority be signed and submitted
under penalty of perjury. By expanding the crime of perjury, this bill would impose a state -
mandated local program.
The California Constitution requires the state to reimburse local agencies and school
districts for certain costs mandated by the state. Statutory provisions establish procedures
for making that reimbursement. This bill would provide that no reimbursement is required
by this act fora specified reason.
Fiscal Analysis
There is no fiscal impact to the City of Palm Desert.
