HomeMy WebLinkAboutDine Out PD Restraunt Promo - Late Summer-Early Fall 2010iP CITY OF PALM DESERT STAFF REPORT REQUEST: AUTHORIZATION TO PROCEED WITH IMPLEMENTATION OF A DINE OUT PALM DESERT RESTAURANT PROMOTION FOR ONE MONTH DURING LATE SUMMER, EARLY FALL 2010 SUBMITTED BY: Donna Gomez, Visitor Center Manager DATE: March 11, 2010 Recommendation By Minute Motion: Authorize the implementation of a Dine Out Palm Desert restaurant promotion in late summer, early fall 2010. Funds are available in the Marketing Budget, Account No. 110-4417-414-3223. Background Based on the success of the first Dine Out Palm Desert restaurant promotion, it is expected that running a similar promotion later this year would provide another opportunity to promote Palm Desert restaurants as well as increase business and garner new customers. The program would be altered slightly to incorporate participants' suggestions and would remain a 20 percent off discount program open to all 192 Palm Desert restaurants. The promotion date (month) will be determined through further input to be received by local restaurants. In January 2010 staff implemented a new restaurant promotion titled Dine Out Palm Desert. Thirty-eight restaurants were recruited and participated in the month -long program by agreeing to offer a 20 percent discount off all food purchases. The variety of participating restaurants was vast and included fast food to fine dining establishments. Over 8,000 coupons were distributed through the Palm Desert Visitor Center, City Hall, Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce, and local hotel concierges. A printable version was posted on the City's websites with over 1,200 copies having been printed from those sites. Participating restaurant responses have been generally very positive with a few constructive suggestions for improvement relating to terms and conditions of the program. All comments will be taken into consideration and incorporated into the new program as allowed. Some requested the program occur two to three times per year, and specifically during late summer, early fall. Additional restaurant input is forthcoming Staff Report Dine Out Palm Desert March 11, 2010 Page 2 of 2 regarding the most opportune month to run the program later this year. Staff has asked them to consider the months of July, August, September, or October. The program terms and conditions will continue to exclude beverages, alcohol, taxes, and gratuities, and note that the coupon cannot be combined with any other offers. Advertising and promotion of the program will remain the same and include radio and print advertising, and an article in the BrightSide. Fiscal Analysis Staff estimates program costs for advertising, printing, and website placement will not exceed $6,500. Funds are available in the Marketing Budget, Account No. 110-4417- 414-3223.
